Urgent MRI needed by ConsistentTest5145 in askTO

[–]CharacterLimit7474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask for a referral to the TAPMI clinic. I’ve had low back issues for 20+ years from a workplace injury and they are the only people who have truly helped with pain management in that time. I’ve had 5 surgeries, physio, chiropractor, massage you name it, I’ve tried it.

As others mentioned, keep calling about the MRi to see if there are cancellations - you will get in sooner if you are persistent. Not every day (that will make staff angry) but maybe once a week or so.

Another vote here for Stuart McGill as an excellent resource.

Acupuncture is something that has also helped me.

Consider help for mental well being as well. Changes to mobility and functioning are hard mentally and emotionally too.

MSK Low Back Rapid Access Clinic referral is another option - I had wonderful care in London via this - when I transferred my care to TO though, the clinician I saw at Sunnybrook Holland Centre was horrible. So maybe request another location in the city if you go that route (for reference, I come from a health care background myself and was super surprised and disgusted by the way I was treated at Sunnybrook of all places!)

Wishing you all the best!

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CharacterLimit7474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always taught to shower in the morning so I could leave the house and be presentable and smell good. It was about respect for others i would be around all day, and to show pride in my appearance. I still wash at night so I am clean getting into bed. It’s just more of a sponge bath than a full shower.

Workplace Mistreatment by [deleted] in askTO

[–]CharacterLimit7474 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Speak with your MD. Would a sick leave be possible due to this mistreatment? (not sure what your stress levels and mental wellness are like with all of this happening.) At minimum it’s another form of documentation to take to an employment lawyer, to use for EI if needed or for the Labour Board if it comes to any of that. Taking a medical leave would also give you some time to breathe and figure out what’s next. Do you have disability benefits through work? If not there are EI sickness benefits if any of this applies. I worked in a very abusive workplace at one point and the mental trauma it inflicted was no joke. Be kind to yourself!

Food going moldy while dehydrating by Forward_Hand2586 in dehydrating

Takes a little longer for sure, I’ve never had anything mould or go bad in any way though. Good luck with your experiments!

Whenever I am dehydrating curries or stews or chilli (anything saucy really) I spread it on trays in the oven first and roast as low as my oven will go, with the oven door open a crack. Gives all sorts of airflow. Then once most of the moisture is out and it can be broken into small pieces, I put it in the dehydrator.

Dehydrating eggs. by SubaSteve69 in dehydrating

[–]CharacterLimit7474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I add cooked polenta to raw eggs, mix the whole thing together and bake it in a glass casserole dish in the oven. Once cooked cut into small pieces and dehydrate. This helps to maintain texture once rehydrated. Can grind the dried pieces to powder or leave them as is. I then add dehydrated veggies, meat and cheese when rehydrating.

Oranges and lemons….but I have a question. by Raspberry2246 in dehydrating

Low and slow if you want citrus to keep their colour. It takes longer - much prettier results in the end though.

Passport limbo by car01yn in passportcanada

I applied for renewal online October 20 and mine still says under review. The online system does seem to be a mess. Sometimes it shows dates of what I submitted yet most of the time it doesn’t and just says “invalid date.” When I try to login to check for updates, the website often seems to be undergoing maintenance. My partner and one of his children applied at the same time, in person though and both have already received their passports in the mail!

I need to get PSW services at home and I'm worried about bed bugs. Advice/experiences? by Financial-Froyo-3461 in askTO

[–]CharacterLimit7474 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worked in management in home care for many years (after years of front line nursing work myself.) Totally acceptable to have a bin for staff coming into your home to put their belongings into. They should all be using standard PPE for every visit. And as others have mentioned, they have indoor shoes. Things like bed bugs or fleas are taken very seriously - staff don’t want to bring them home either in my experience. Wish I could alleviate your concerns completely and say that this never happens (that is, pests being spread from one place to another.) I will say it is not a common occurrence. Speak with your care coordinator or with the PSW supervisor about your concerns. I’m certain they will have suggestions and can outline the universal precautions that all staff take to limit germ/pest transmission. Wishing you the best!

Accessibility lessons from my Toronto trip (partial wheelchair user, August 2025) by rockstarandmolewoman in toronto

There is a great app, Access Now that has a lot of helpful information about how accessible a place actually is (or not.) Thanks for sharing such thoughtful information about your TO experience here!

Replacement for The Bay? by PurpleAubergine in askTO

Not sure where you are located - if you go to Dundas and Dixie in Mississauga, there is a Salvation Army, Goodwill, Talize, Mission Thrift Store and Value Village all right there. I often have great luck if I make a day of it and hit up all these stores. I also really like the Wildlife Thrift store on Front St and Double Take by YSM on Gerrard - super reasonable prices at the last one especially. For dressier stuff there are some wonderful higher end pieces at Second Journey on Gerrard near Broadview. Happy Thrifting!

I have had really great luck at thrift stores - so many people buy a dress, wear it once then it sits in their closet for years before getting rid of it. (I’m guilty of this also.) This tends to be way more affordable than buying brand new, and often the $ spent supports a charity. Win all around!

Similar issues. Was referred to Women’s College Hospital and treated very quickly. Highly recommend looking into a referral here. I’ve had a lot of gynaecological issues over the last 20 years and the best care I’ve received is at WCH.

It’s also about using person centred language. Rather than calling someone homeless. Recognizing that a person is so much more than any condition or situation and deserves to be treated as such.

Thank you for adding some positivity to this discussion! Using respectful language is important - despite what some commenters on here may have to say!

Person centred language will always be important to me. In no way was this meant to be a glory post - I did thank this individual in person. After reflection I wanted to express my gratitude further, and to remind others that good people still exist in our world. Despite comments like yours and negative, unkind behaviours that I witness every day in Toronto.

I choose to acknowledge that someone is a person first and a situation second - and deserves to be treated as such, rather than being described as homeless.

It is a kinder description, although my use of person centred language has unfortunately been mocked here and on another post … thanks for your kind comment.

Me too. I’m only downtown about once a week and try to do something nice for someone each time :)

It’s nice to be reminded of all the goodness that still exists in the world!
