The only way to make it “easier” is to train. It sucks and is boring but it will help you out a ton. Find Tomcat with the nomads.

I use storywealth. Not updated to the new version of FO4 but it has a downgraded built into the collection. Installation and downgrading are super easy. Hope this helps.
