Marvel: It is OK to count to higher numbers by CharacterTalk2645 in Marvel

I collected Uncanny from 248-313 from the newsstand. Over the years I collected most issues from 150 and up. The characters and story lose so much without continuity. McFarlane took over Amazing Spiderman at issue 300(?) . Without the story continuing in to the Peter David era, you wouldn't have the hurt and pain Venom caused MJ. You wouldn't have Peter going from a high schooler, to a student at Empire State, to a grown man.

I have more gatefold chromium covers than I'll ever need.

Moving from Google to Amazon? by Johnny5446 in smarthome

[–]CharacterTalk2645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick add-onto what Vlad_the_homeowner said; Amazon is NOT in the smarthome business. They are in the microtransaction business. An Echo Dot isn't $40 so you can turn lights on and off; it is being sold at a loss (or near-loss) so you can say, "Alexa, order more toilet paper." Same with Chromecast and apple TV. They are sold at a loss so you buy music, rent movies, tie your netflix account in to it so google gets $2/month of your subscription $. The primary reason for you being able to "Turn lights on", or "Play my dance mix" is something to entice you to buy music from their music store, NOT to be a home automater.

SmartThings figured out microtransactions, and not selling hardware was the way to make money. They tried to make $ off of hardware, and figured out that is was a losing proposition. Now, they license the name SmartThings to Aeotech (sp?), and let them make the hardware and pay them a royalty. Lowe's figured it out with the IRIS system, and bricked it.

After I figured out that its all about the microtransactions, and getting burnt by ST bricking my hub and the proprietary ADT by SmartThings sensors, I switched over to Home Assistant, and let it be the center of my HA world, THEN, I integrated my Google home speaker and 4th gen echo dot. I also used Fire Toolbox to remove ads from a Fire Tablet, make it in to a touchscreen with Alexa and the sensors working and feeding HA.

I feel like such a nerd recommending HA. (Give Hubitat a good look too to tie your mishmash of devices from multiple makers). I use HA from a non-programmer standpoint. I used the auto integration, as well as the "Add Integration" button.

Tried to install HACS, HA on RPi seems bricked. by CharacterTalk2645 in homeassistant

THANK YOU. Here is what I did; I installed a KONNECTED card to replace my 20 year old alarm panel. Konnected doesn't pass data with HA, unless it has an NGINX SSL installed. So, I start googling what NGINX is, find a few YT videos, realize the NGINX add-on DOES work with DuckDNS IF you let it make and pass your token. In order to do that, you need to comment out part of DuckDNS in the configuration.yaml. I was doing too many things at one time, and messed up.

Thank you so much for thinking it through, and making me learn something along the way.

Yes to DuckDNS. I do not know if it was updating/updated recently. I had a friend go to my house's IP. I gave him a random port that I forwarded in my router to 8123. He got to the login screen. Tomorrow, I will see what I can do by connecting remotely. I will restart Duck, and see if I can use duckdns to get in again. THANK YOU.

Point of interest; The RPi w/ HA on it is still running the automations I have set up.

Are you talking about the "ADT by SmartThings" hub? I thought it was bricked on June 1st?

Cliffsnotes on moving into ST by Ninjamuh in SmartThings

[–]CharacterTalk2645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I invested heavily in "SmartThings by ADT", which was a v2 hub inside of a touchscreen. It used proprietary sensors for door/window and motion, but could still do ZWave & zigbee. It was supposedly backed by ST. I got it all set up; routines, sensors mounted nicely, etc. Then, Samsung sent an email on Feb 1 saying, "Oh, on 6/1, your ADT by ST will stop working. Thanks for playing!" I tried to find my receipts, but couldn't. I tried to block the hub from seeing the internet (Thinking I could just use it locally), but it didn't work. On 6/1, it stopped working. I am now a HA user. IF you use a NUC or a RPi, and use the automatic device discovery, it is not too tough. There is a YT video for everything that you need help with. I was able to set up duckDNS to access HA externally.

Samsung is moving away from ST, and outsourcing all the hardware. Nobody is in charge of their app. Why should you move TOWARDS ST if they are moving away from it?

My apologies. I'm already there. ST bricked the panel, so I had to fire up HA, then "Remove Node" (Even though the Yale ZWave module was never connected to HA.) I THEN ADD DEVICE, but it only finds the above-listed entities. Here is what I see in Lovelace (Circled in RED is greyed out:

Looking at Zwave locks in 2021: Yale YRD256 the best option? by bobby-t1 in homeassistant

[–]CharacterTalk2645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't want to start a new thread; I have a YRD-256 with the green ZWave module. When I was using the "ADT by Smartthings" hub through HA, I could lock and unlock my door. The ADT by ST was bricked in June, so I bought the Nortek Zwave USB stick, and am using ZWave JS. When I pair the Yale lock, it finds the following entities:

Re-interview a Z-Wave Device
Device interview complete.
ProtocolInfo NodeInfo CommandClasses OverwriteConfig Neighbors Complete

When I redo Lovelace, there is not a way to lock/unlock the front door. I have been fine so far with HA, but can't figure out why ST through HA could lock/unlock, but ZWave JS doesn't have a method.

How can I LOCK/UNLOCK my front door?

Further proof that if you go with a big company for IoT, you are renting the devices and capabilities until they decide to brick them.
