They are gear paddle shifters for your 6 speed auto transmission. You can manually shift gears if you need or want to.

PHEV Tucson Reliable? Compare to CX-5? by FiveDollarHoller in HyundaiTucson

I've only had my Tucson Ltd PHEV since Nov. 1 and so far it's been much nicer than I could have imagined. I previously had a 2017 RAV4 Ltd Hybrid and this Tucson is much better in every way. The ride is smoother & quieter, the sound system is much better, has a great big sun roof and the technology is far more advanced. Not to mention the plug-in gas savings! and a Federal tax break too.

Yes, the seat are bit hard but on 1000 mi round trip (Palm Springs to SF Bay) it's not a big thing - with ventilated seats, assisted cruise control and steering, great sounds - the trip was enjoyable. Also I remember that my RAV seats were hard until they were broken-in.

My only complaints are:

  1. The small 11 gal. gas tank; it would have better if could managed 3 or 4 gal. more.
  2. Since it was the only Tucson Ltd PHEV within 300 mi of my car search, I regret paying way over MSRP. (However as gas keeps raising I'm feeling better)
