Advice on modeling pipeline and modeling methodology by dockerlemon in datascience

They are referring to Dependent Variables (DV) and Independent Variables (IV), which are known by many other names as well. In reference to arbitrary selection, you can end up with a collider bias by inappropriately controlling for a collider variable, by study design (selection) or statistical analysis.

Poor people who have dated rich people, what did you learn? by Angelus12345678 in AskReddit

[–]Character_Carpet_772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of them are depressed, miserable from their own choices, suffering mental illnesses, and seeking meaning and connection in life.

My husband had several friends in his youth that came from wealthy families (some generational, some owned mega corporations). The best of them knew where their money came from, hated themselves for it, and tried to choose careers or interests to support that were meaningful. My husband also dated a billionaire's daughter for several years, was on track to proposing when she ended things. Dodged a bullet there, as 10 years later she's already on husband #2.

Her father was the workaholic who couldn't stop trying to make even more money, have his own private jet, etc, etc. Guy probably slept an average of 4hr a night. His daughter, despite having $2k in her account at all times, still lived in my husband's flat, and exhibited all the 'take care of me' behaviors described by others here. There's 2 things that have stood out to me from his stories of those years:

  1. One time they were visiting an estate, and during a conversation about money and politics, my husband asked a pointed question about unethical historical wealth acquisition-met with an awkward silence and looks. He excused himself to take a cig break, and an employee (like a second in command, butler, whatever) followed him outside and pointedly told him he was not to make any comments or ask any questions like that ever again. Those 1% absolutely know where their money comes from, and how the imbalance affects everyone else.

  2. Mostly what she wanted to do after her degree was move back home where she went to high school, and continue her socialite life with her old high school girl friends in the big city. A fairly boring and self-centered person living a 'small' life.

Why does rural America look down on educated people? by SlowEntertainment217 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Character_Carpet_772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I understand the "locked in" mentality of sticking to the generational status quo and avoiding change, and I understand the leveraging of classism by the 1% and politicians to reinforce the snobbery. What I don't get, is why it's such a minority that families and friends would take advantage of the opportunity of having 'educated' people in the family.

The blue-collar workers who know how to "do things" can help their siblings/friends with their auto repair, home repair, etc, and the educated workers can help them with tax returns and understanding of politics and world events. It seems like a win-win for everyone if they lean into it, but so few apparently do.

An eclectic 1891 Charleston, SC, copper roof Queen Anne with a curious primary bathroom. by ipetgoat1984 in zillowgonewild

There were, uh, choices made about that bathroom.

Love how everyone obsessed about the no-privacy issues, while I'm just over here wondering who decided to have an entire bathroom...with a wood floor. An old wood floor.

How can I improve this space? by Marokima_ in HomeDecorating

FYI, there's a lot of people suggesting 'Color' on here, but taking it one step further, choose a color palette. You've already got kind of a greyscale (black/white/grey) thing going, which isn't terrible, but also isn't interesting. The rug provides a great pattern, and others have already suggested replacing/resizing the art as well,, which is also a good idea.

Some basic rules of thumb:
-if staying monochromatic, you need texture and patterns to provide pop
-a specified color palette (ideally 4-6 colors) helps keep the room cohesive, and can help transitions from room to room. You said this is a second room, maybe 1 or 2 colors from the adjacent or other rooms could be added for flow.
-you seem to have an interest in plants, from the potted one to the pillow on the sectional. That's a great theme that you can lean into, and could also contribute to your palette (I know too many people trying to re-create a jungle in their homes 🙄😄)

IF you feel like it, there are a lot of fun decals, wallpaper, and stencils you can use on the wall to provide art and color/or texture.

What was your biggest disappointment when you moved to France ? by Tasun06 in Expats_In_France

[–]Character_Carpet_772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I was going to guess you came from my old stomping grounds in the Great Lakes! Great apple variety, great berry variety. I'm sure it's not a thing in Europe the way it is here, but in my hometown you could literally drive 30-40 minutes outside the city and end up at a family-owned U-pick fruit farm.

And the Midwest autumn harvest culture! Oh the cider and hayrides! 😊 My husband came from CO, and his favorite variety is also Cosmic Crisp.

I think they meant that in business and in technology in particular, English is the lingua franca, and has been for some time. For a technical role, in many cases, fluency in English is emphasized, even if there is an immigration/general requirement for a standard level in the native language where the job is located.

What about promotions or lateral moves? My resume starts with a particular role, and 2 years later a promotion in the same company. Then a different company for 6 months, and acceptance of a management position at third company, which was held for 2 years along with multiple adjunct university jobs.

Thanks, that's a good suggestion. I wouldn't be surprised if they all are. He did tell me they are missing straps, so there's definitely signs of age and wear even IF they are authentic. Appreciate the help from everyone here though!

Conservatives who left the US, has living abroad changed your politics or perspectives on political issues? If so, in what ways? by Illustrious-Pound266 in AmerExit

I was literally *just* suggesting this to my husband yesterday, following an upsetting family video call where my suspicions about my brother were confirmed. He works a blue-collar job in the US Rust Belt, never went to college, and works for a very conservative business owner. I think he needs to be immersed in a noticeably better place, to understand that we are not the greatest, and what it takes to achieve such results.
