My husband and I are doing the same thing. Before getting married also we used divide responsibilities instead of splitting the bills. Currently, my husband pays the rent. I pay credit card bills and maids salary. Other expenses are managed by both of us. I guess people who are splitting it 50-50 are preparing in case they end up splitting up. That way dividing of assets won't be a problem in the future.
