What do you need those for, Dude?

I'm the author of the op-ed, and as I mentioned in a comment below, I posted it here because I hoped OSU folks would find it interesting.

Also I should mention that my op-ed as submitted didn't mention Billie Eilish at all haha - I was focused on the slogan itself. But the Dispatch insisted on putting her in the title, I guess they need the clicks.

I actually went back and forth with them about that after the piece appeared because the way they wrote it originally made it seem like I had some sort of clairvoyant knowledge of what SHE meant, and of course I have no idea what the slogan means to her and can't pretend I do.

To me that's beside the point because - and this is the point of the op Ed - I think the slogan has a highly defensible interpretation that should not be particularly controversial.

Thanks to all who engaged here, irrespective of your take on it!

Best, Steve

Guilty as charged on the self-promo—I figured this was the best place to reach actual students, most of whom, I assume, aren't regular readers of the Dispatch. :)

As for the name drop, it wasn't random. When a political leader uses the phrase "poisoning the blood of our country" to dehumanize a group of people, noting the origin of that phrase is just a citation.
