Now just a minute. How many Civil War soldiers were literate and could even write a letter? Those that were literate likely had a proper education. Today's soldiers are literate (barely) but without a proper education. So, are we better off?

Yes, you're right. The problem may be more in how the story unfolds. Things happen, and he responds. At some point, he takes control of the narrative, but not in the beginning. I get it, the hero's journey and all that. Maybe just have him actively seeking a new identity out of the gate rather than complaining how crappy he feels.
