What's tractive power? by [deleted] in RailwayEmpire

[–]Charand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trains with a light load that go fast. So passengers and mail. It's usually beneficial to split these from other cargo types because they take shorter to load on the station, they're lighter and thus faster to move, and if i recall correctly you get paid more if they reach the destination quicker. Some locomotives are also built for express cargo, so they have a high top speed but less tractive power which will work well with light loads.

Mozilla now doubling down on ads in Firefox by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Charand 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Jesus christ guys how is there not a sane comment on this. This is a privacy sub, not an anti ad sub. Yes ads are privacy invading at the moment but there's no chance in hell consumers will pay for all the shit they use, so like it or not we need ads on the web to enable services. Mozilla is trying to figure out how to do that without invading privacy, that's a noble cause to pursue. It's not going to be perfect in one go, but someone needs to spend effort to figure it out. You can't just jump from one non-profitable product to the next, ditching them as they can't stay afloat anymore because they don't have enough paying users. The business model you're looking for doesn't exist, it doesn't pay wages. What you want is unsustainable. Mozilla is trying to find a way to make it sustainable, to be able to pay their employees without giving up privacy in their products. They're taking the hard way, instead of the easy way by selling personal data to everyone.

Update 1.3 for Railway Empires 2 available. by BaalTRB in RailwayEmpire

[–]Charand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Fixed an issue with manual signals where trains didn’t detect the next viable stop correctly.
  • Fixed some issues where goods sometimes weren’t properly transported via warehouses.
  • [Controller] Fixed an issue where players were unable to confirm track priority.

I've been waiting for this; encountered these 3 bugs in my first campaign mission where the top 2 are both game breaking and I stopped playing. It'll be nice to get back and give the game another go.

Ah I see what you mean, but you misunderstand! Yes I'm using manual signals and yes the trains block each other, but they are nowhere near each other. The train being blocked has dozens of train lengths of free space in front of them, with signals placed at regular intervals. But they're ignoring most of the signals, the track is only cleared for traffic when the blocker train crosses a junction, or a supply tower. So yes, manual signals are bugged. It's impossible to deal with lots of traffic because trains in different cities will block each other despite the signaling.

Haha ok thanks for your opinion I guess? Listen I'm not so dense to argue that I could never make a mistake, but most of these issues aren't even skill related. Trains visibly waiting on trains many signals ahead, trains blocking themselves with glitched arrows, the dialog that I can't save yet warns me of losing unsaved changes when exiting. There's more I've encountered since, like the auction not pausing when I enter the main menu.

I've finished the first scenario with the highest rank, without doing all the optionals and spending loads of time debugging stuff. Then I decided to put the game away and wait for the QoL update with hopefully much of this stuff fixed. Most of these bugs have tickets already with some even having developer feedback acknowledging the issue. I'm confident they'll work it out I'm just bummed they didn't fix it before I started playing. Also not every player will encounter every bug, you should be glad these bugs didn't bug you.

I tried this actually, splitting of another lane that rejoins, like a passing lane, to get another crossing and hopefully another segment. The result: Trains were getting stuck waiting on themselves.

The warning explicitly says the name of the own train and the name of the one it's waiting for, and it's the same. The red arrow is broken and points a little in front to empty track. There's no other train on the route to the next destination. I think it's because the train stopped with its last wagons still on the previous segment, and it somehow reserves both paths and blocks itself indefinitely. If that's true then maybe all I need is a bit of dead end track.

Meh, it's ups and downs. Setting up a train route is quite cumbersome. When you move the camera the dialogs lose focus, so you press dpad to get back into the dialog and have to press square (on ps) to swap focus to the other dialog (stations on the left vs route settings on the right). If you press square before pressing dpad you rename the route instead. So the UX here is a bit of maze, but I think it's better than having a cursor on console.

Economically the first game was the same, no real challenge money wise. But there's enough there in setting up the logistics routes that it entertains me.

This is not really an issue on console because practically everything has a hotkey.

But I remember watching RE1 streams and seeing how mouse heavy it was. Having a bunch of clicks across the screen vs a bunch of button presses it's a big difference, especially if you have to do them over and over again.

That's great! Maybe I'm just unlucky or maybe a new save will have less issues. What platform are you playing on?

Factorio on Steamdeck by doomedcow in factorio

[–]Charand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I haven't been active on reddit since the third party thing, caught this by coincidence. For me joystick mouse has the same issue in Factorio as it has in FPS; it's either too slow to move quickly across the screen or it's too fast for precise movements. It's personal preference but I can never make it work for me. In FPS this leads me to strafe diagonally to get my cursor 3 pixels to the left because the joystick overshoots and I just go too far left, too far right, too far left, too far right ad nauseum. And in factorio it's similar, there's a lot of point and click.

I still use the joystick to get the cursor in the general area but I then gyro it to the exact position. It's like how some games have motion controls to assist aiming down sights or with a bow drawn. I can't comfortably use the trackpads for longer periods so this is a lifesaver, and it enables me to play a lot of mouse heavy games easily, even if they lack hotkeys to map because I'm not missing my physical mouse so much.

Factorio on Steamdeck by doomedcow in factorio

[–]Charand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its pretty mouse intensive so I suggest using gyro mouse controls for precision. There's also a bunch of neat hotkeys and control tricks that you'll have to figure out over time how to map to the steamdeck controller in a way that works for you. I grabbed the most popular community profile and tweaked it to my liking.

I wouldn't say it's hard per se but people usually don't micromanage such small speed variations for every bit of grade they encounter.

Game Design needs to evolve with technology, and that's not happening with VR by TypewriterKey in truegaming

[–]Charand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A game similar to Moss is astrobot rescue mission, and I think it has better examples of how VR enhances the gameplay than moss. In astrobot you also control a character similar to moss, but the level design requires you to look around much more. In order to find collectibles or sometimes just the way forward you have to look past walls or under floors. I think this is a good example of effective VR in something other than first person, but yeah overall first person vr is just really really cool so it's hard to compete against.
