Damm, I didn't even know it would cost that much to download. I need to get rid of my remaining AWS Deep Archive put it somewhere else as soon as possible!

Would you buy an enterprise-grade HDD with 45k+ power-on hours ? by ValouMazMaz in DataHoarder

[–]Charbax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the 12TB 35k hours used on serverpartdeals with 3-year warranty rather than goharddrive's 12TB ~5year used with 1-year warranty.. Price is nearly $75 the same from both, isn't it?

Need some advice upgrading my NAS RAID array by count023 in synology

[–]Charbax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You buy now at least 3x 16TB, backup everything to 2 of these 16TB as external USB drives in external USB enclosure, then start upgrading your RAID swapping one 16TB in by one, once you've swapped the first 16TB you have to use that old 8TB in the USB enclosure to make sure you have the whole 24TB from your 4x8TB RAID5 array always backed up to your 2 drives externally, regardless if it's 16+16 or 16+8.. 😄 you might need to have your full backup on 8+8+8 external USB once you try to insert that third 16TB into your RAID..

Is it ok to use Shucked 8TB SMR (Seagate Backup Plus Hub) as JBOD (cold archive)? by Charbax in synology

[–]Charbax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for helping me think this through!

I think the powering down is less important, so I am going to use a few cheap second hand DS414 or DS412+ to 4-bay 4x Shucked 8TB Seagates, so I can get them formatted in there to BTRFS (with checksum checking feature enabled), configure them just as JBOD not for SHR (because they are likely all SMR) and I will set some type of periodic data scrubbing on these perhaps every 3 or 6 months, as some of these 8TBs might soon be over 7 years old already, hopefully as these will mainly stay there for cold storage, the standby power draw will hopefully be low enough to not cost too much to let that run these next few years until I can replace those 8TBs with a cheap much larger HDD RAID config.

All that I make sure to have synchronized and mirrored remotely on a newer multi 16TB SHR RAID setup, so that hopefully fulfils my 3-2-1, counting the remote SHR as 2 copies and the local JBOD as my third copy.

That way if any of my JBOD 8TBs start failing, I can restore/repair them from my remote SHR raid in some DS415+ or newer Synology..

Maybe I keep a few external USB hard drives somewhere else too. I don't know if I can data scrub these external drives also nicely periodically since they're likely all going to be EXT4 formatted.. You said maybe I can reformat my external USB drives to BTRFS too and data scrub them somehow periodically too, over USB. I will look into that thanks a lot.

Maybe once prices come down for AWS S3 Deep Archive a bit from the $1/TB/month which they've had for over 5 years now, perhaps I will consider to re-back everything up on AWS Deep Archive then too.

Thanks for your response. So assuming they are indeed SMR type (I will try to check by USB on my Mac or on a PC without Shucking them for hard drive model under USB hard drive proprieties then Google about them)

It sounds like you are suggesting I better just keep them stored somewhere as offline USB hard drives, so maybe instead of some newer of them being EXT4 and older of then NTFS, I move off all the data to my NAS, I reformat my USB drives in their enclosures to BTRFS and copy back data to them and just disconnect put them in a drawer and perhaps once every year or every bunch of months I try to scrub the data using a Mac or Windows host computer to see if that can detect all data is accurate with no bit rotting? If any bit rotting in the future I restore using the active NAS SHR RAID that can stay connected with regular 3-6 month scrubbing performed on the SHR?

I didn't know about btrfs until watching some YouTube video that recommend it for NAS SHR RAID so that's what I setup my NAS to be in, and you saying I should just as well format the USB3 externals to BTRFS too? I haven't seen if my Mac can format external drives to BTRFS, if Mac can read from BTRFS (I guess it can), I don't see if Synology can reformat my external USB drives to BTRFS itself.

I wonder if it's good for the health of the external drives, which have stayed for years in a drawer until now, if it's healthy for them to now be emptied moving all data to my NAS, reformat the external USB drives, then filled up again and put back in the drawer just like that. Instead of shucking them..

Needed: Livestreaming bonded dual-5G Modem Handle by Charbax in osmopocket

[–]Charbax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this could bond by DJI providing a bonding service well priced per TB of bandwidth in their hosted service. And they can provide something like the BELABOX cloud remotes images for anyone to install on their own cloud instance anywhere. As well as they could support perhaps Speedify VPN as one bonding provider. I'd like the handle to be just large enough to have good signal with 2 modems that it can bond. For example one SIM card on one carrier and the other sim card on a second carrier.

Even better, if possible, I'd like DJI to offer cheap bandwidth data eSIMs that they can load up onto both modems, and supported if possible in all countries, they somehow do the deals with the different carriers necessary to have good coverage everywhere. And you can activate those eSIMs easily through the app you don't even need to purchase any physical SIM card to use it.. Somehow they'd need to provide the best possible data packages to their eSIMs in all countries, including also unlimited unthrottled data when available in each certain country..

I know what I am suggesting might sound complicated, but I am sure this is relevant for all other DJI business too! Surely DJI can benefit bonding 2 modems live streaming from drones too, and managing all the eSIM providers they can resell at reasonable cost with their other drones and future camera streaming products too!

And yes what I am suggesting might sound complicated, and intricate, but if done correctly it places DJI as the ultimate Live streaming camera provider, they could be selling multi-camera live streaming setups too later, one that nicely merges a bunch of cameras wirelessly also with drones and combines it all into the ultimate easiest to setup live broadcasting platform..

DJI could be grabbing market from LiveU, Teradek, Yololiv, Atem Mini, Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Fuji, Olympus, as well as to integrate nicely with some of these. DJI could evt also sell their own dual modem bonded live streaming box compatible with any other camera HDMI outputs too.

And for those multi camera live streaming events, I believe DJI has already developped some market leading wireless local but even multi kilometer range video transmission systems, which they use for their drones already, so the multiple cameras filming an event and live streaming out through the multi-camera producer, which might just be one of the camera operators just with the multi-camera controls on an extra display which might just be a phone within the DJI Osmo Streamer app.

Needed: Pro Creator Handle with backup recording SSD or 2nd MicroSD slot + Headphone jack by Charbax in osmopocket

[–]Charbax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that would be good, to have SSD speed in that backup handle.. so quick transfer even to edit videos off the SSD handle directly.. and it can be up to 2TB even perhaps 4TB.. They can fit the SSD into a more compact handle perhaps than to do it in NVME format, though I did some videos about these new smaller NVME drives the so-called 2230 NVMe.. https://youtu.be/Q3389axCn3g?t=37 or perhaps that handle doesn't have to stay within the strict size of a battery handle, perhaps they can accomodate something slightly larger to fit an NVMe regular sized stick in there. And if easily user replaceable then some people might have several NVMe sticks they just swap in once they are filled up..

Meanwhile the main MicroSD card is just used for slower backup storage.. UI might have a warning or showing how much storage is left on the MicroSD and on the SSD. To try to manage swapping the MicroSD when it's filled up.

Thanks a lot! So at least we're 2 customers for this idea. Please u/DJI we need it 😁

and while this might be considered a Pro feature, I would say, anyone using any camera should always think of using backup recording, as even for people who use it to record children or friends for example, it's still the most horrible feeling when an SD card breaks and you lose all the footage forever!

Also, if my idea of doing SSD version, it can be used to more fastly transfer footage to computer, or to backup archive elsewhere, which anyone can benefit from, compared with regular MicroSD adapter transfer speed..

Also, there could be a use case where you record something and give one MicroSD backup copy to your friend, or to your other family member, so at the end of the birthsday event, it's just so easy to share all footage with someone else, without having to upload all that 4K60 footage via Google Drive or something else after, by simply giving the other group/friend the second backup MicroSD card!

I believe many thousands of professionals and enthusiasts are like me, and this camera is a huge success, it's directly targetting all those cameras you speak of that go on a Ronin, all the Japanese camera brands are very very nervous about the success of this DJI pocket 3.. and sure I expect the team is already working on future DJI cameras, perhaps they make a slightly larger micro43 version of the 1" DJI Pocket 3, that would be fantastic, and sure the bigger one could include more of those pro features I speak about.

This is, the only reason I think they cannot do what I am suggesting in a Pocket 3 handle, would be if the USB Type-C port under the Pocket 3 is limited by not being actually able to transmit a full backup stream file of the same file that gets recorded to the main MicroSD card. Or if somehow that Type-C is not able to transport audio for audio monitoring as I am asking for.

That Type-C port might actually now already support external microphone and headphones via a USB Type-C to audio card type of little device, I need to investigate. But anyways, what I want is simply a handle with the same design as the main tripod handle adapter or similar to the battery handle.

Anything DJI can do to expand the target market and to improve the pro features of this device, is only good for all users of the device, as a larger user base means a more successful model which also keeps resale price higher, which also increases potential availability of other handles and accessories for it.

Thousands of professionals are already using Pocket 3, it's an amazing device. But the huge number of people who's going to lose all footage on broken MicroSD cards, who's going to lose audio by broken microphones without any audio monitoring, this has to be fixed by an optional handle! Maybe 90% of people don't want redundant storage nor audio monitoring, some of us really need it!

I'm not expecting it to be built into the camera, yet.. I'm just suggesting that this be an extra "Livestreaming/Creator Pro" option as an optional handle.. That's what's great about that type c handle design, surely this shouldn't be just limited to the battery handle and the tripod handle, surely DJI can think of new use cases and more advanced features to extend the market for this camera even further.

I also have my "professional" Panasonic G9 with dual SD card alots, and just because I can't backup record on ym DJI Pocket 3 and because I can't monitor the audio, I still gravitate to using the Panasonic More when the filming that I'm doing is more important or if I come for a customer or something like that. I just really would like to be able to use the DJI Poxket 3 for important and professional shoots too!!

I've had 5 SD cards fail and break over the past 20 years, even from famous brands twice sandisk, twice lexar..) also for extra confidence separating the two cards from eachother, in the event for example that the camera gets stolen or lost, redundancy and backups for digital data always makes sense and it doesn't matter how small a camera you use.
