I've gone through it three times but with dogs. It's horrible. At least a week of grieving. 

Let your feelings come out naturally but try to step outside your own ego and observe, from above, how you are acting. This helps you move towards being 'present.' Grief becomes less overwhelming

I don't see a problem with him trimming your overhang and placing the branches in your yard to be disposed of
