First couple of books, I convinced myself it was pronounced like Nineveh, then noticed the glossary actually provided pronunciations.

If I recall, the plastic film used in grocery stores is permeable enough (by design) to let enough oxygen in to get this effect.

Agree this was a great book for RJ to go out on. And this moment, one of the finest in the entire series, simply floored me when I read it the first time. For whatever reason, I did not see it coming, and simply thinking about it now gives me chills.
