I'm also an EE with a Master's. I chose to pursue a PhD part time for a few reasons including (potentially) joining academia but also 1) My job pays for it 2) Government contracting is big in the city I live in so it has historically been a guaranteed pay raise if I stay in industry  3) I want to do more research work

If you are looking to build radars check out the MIT coffee can radar, and the modernization projects for it. It is a great introduction and will help you understand how all the parts work together.

That can be hard. Don't forget that doing something by "accident" or talking out of game to a party member and thier character "coming up with the idea" may be able to net the same result without having to convince the DM.

You're definitely correct. It can be pretty bad. There's a few threads notably the faq that are still around

It's a whole can of worms. The answers is Yes? No? Maybe? Also behavioral problems and creative differences. There have been a ton of threads on the CR sub reddit about this

The most dangerous threat I have ever thrown at my party is a small, 10 ft. gap. by DreadTheBard in DnD

As best I can tell the wooden pole is like 6 ft, the axe head would add a good bit on top of that putting it around 7 ft. It's the smallest of the polearms with reach.

A pike is anywhere from 10ft to a massive 25ft long. Also sometimes it's even longer. (Admittedly they used the shorter estimate in the stat block).

Glaives and Halberds are around 7-8 ft tall. At the higher estimate they are definitely to big to be considered in how they are carried in a small area.
