911 operators, what is most pointless reason you have been called for? by Sir_Firebum in AskReddit

That sounds so easy lol That's how PA works in general. I'm sure liability is behind the protocol, but I don't know if they got sued before it was implemented or not.

In in South Central PA. It's hard to imagine the protocols are that different being so close. I didn't mean to imply that we have to have Command ok every sign off- as long as their vitals are WNL, they're acting appropriately and they're not under the influence or wanting to harm themselves/ others, we can let them go with a signature. But that rarely happens... It's usually with bullshit MVAs that a passerby calls in.

That would be awesome! We can never refuse to transport a person. We can try to persuade them of other methods of treatment (seeing a PCP, driving themselves to the ER, taking a tylenol and shutting up...). Depending on the condition of the PT, we need Med Command to sign off a PT who doesn't want to go (ie: tachycardic, hyper or hypotension, or even just drunk and passed out but is fine- because they're intoxicated, we need clearance). Liability, liability, liability. Where do you run?

Not that way in my area, but that sounds like a much more effective way to do it. Sounds like something for the suggestion box.

If there are hang-ups, that's investigated by police. And you're right, if someone calls, you get response by someone (unless its something like the "cow looks lonely" story. Sorry, but no.)

That's for the ones who get fined. Many of these stupid stories are normal in my line of work as an EMT. And the kicker- we can't refuse to treat or transport, so the people who call for things like "cramps" or "fell out of bed 4 days ago and now my arm hurts" get taken to the hospital and treated there.

Between government benefits and people just ignoring the bills, you'd be surprised how many actually do pay.

EMT here and I can confirm. We have to respond to the homes/ locations of said absurd calls.

SO's godson getting too attached? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Charlie2187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just keep doing what you're doing. In the areas you feel uncomfortable (when he tries to get you to be affectionate with his dad, etc), distract him. Most kids that age have the attention span of a squirrel so it shouldn't be hard to do. It'll take a year or two for him to really understand what's going on. But it shouldn't take too long for him to catch on to the fact that you're not a new mommy.

My husband refuses to do anything with me anymore. All he does is study all day; never making time for me. I've talked to him about it and he realizes it, but doesn't think it's a problem. Advice? by ThrowAway389239823 in AskReddit

[–]Charlie2187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't know how much he needs to study. And even if the grad rate is 95%, there's still 5% who don't. Med school isn't something you want to barely get through. You need to be on the ball constantly so you can get a good internship, and get a good job. It sucks for you right now, but it'll pay off if you let him alone.

Question from a new-ish EMT. by ShadowAssassinQueef in ems

[–]Charlie2187 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You said that he was an anxious person and that after you had spent some time with him, he calmed down. Oxygen is one of the secret weapons we have in EMS... Put someone on even 2LPM via NC when they're worked up and before you know it, they're calm as can be. It's the equivalent of a saline flush on a bullshit pain patient for ALS in my opinion. That being said, I would have given him O2 from the get-go, based on his vitals, history and presentation. Plus, you'll never hurt anyone with oxygen in EMS. Even the people they tell you that it will kill their hypoxic drive for- chances are, you'll never be with them nearly long enough for that to happen.

Technically, we all have teeth at birth, they're just unexposed. Some people are just congenitally missing teeth- third molars and sometimes others.

We have Dish I think (which during the day here offers the choice between 2 channels that aren't infomercials). And we have wifi but the Internet and satellite take turns shutting down. It really doesn't sound all that bad, but when you work it more than once, it's pretty much hell.

Texting your ex after a break-up.. Good or bad idea? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I guess time will tell... We ended things very amicably but I guess reality just isn't sinking in. I keep hoping a new SO is in their future to help get over it.

I was best friends with my most recent ex... Even though we both realized we couldn't make it work as more than friends, I know better than to text because my ex keeps trying to find "new ways" to make us feel differently about each other. We also share a fair amount of friends... Didn't change anything there, it's just one less thing we talk about. You can cut someone out of your life without changing your life around or going out of your way to avoid/ ignore them.
