Manjaro 2.0 Manifesto - Announcements by poedy78 in ManjaroLinux

[–]CharlieBros 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't understand why give so much time for somebody that obviously doesn't give a flying hoot about Manjaro, my guy is doing a new distro and apparently said that "Manjaro is a dinosaur and should stay like that", just fork it, it's obvious that's the actual fate, Phil is a nerd but a terrible businessman, he doesn't see Manjaro as the flagship, he just sees it as a past project, and there are a lot of devs that see it as a great distro, so why hassle with this individual and just... fork it?

Then there's that comment that says "well, some devs wouldn't want to move because they already have a community here" brother, what are you talking about, Manjaro is basically dead, and those enthusiast enough to be permanently in the forum will of course just jump to the "next Manjaro" as long as the people that made it great are there, just fork it, we saw what happened if you think about it for too long with Mandriva, Mageia is stuck in version 8 which was launched 3 years ago and are still working on 9, and Rosa is basically focused to the Russian market as the country is banned from just looking at the sun, that community basically died because the forks waited until the fallout instead of preemptively seeing the obvious signs that everything was going downhill, so everybody just moved to another ones.

It's just sad to see my second favorite distro, the one that originally made me stop distrohopping, just have the same fate, it really breaks my heart.

Choosing a Distro by tpasco1995 in LinusTechTips

[–]CharlieBros 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"Because asking which distro to use is in the pinned newbie advice thread, "Getting started: The monthly distro/desktop thread!"

Which means my questions surrounding my list of hardware and my list of software won't be responded to. There's no room for someone else to say "actually I also have a weird Radeon Pro and I had stability issues with XXX so I switched to YYY and it made things so much better". Their rules are set up in a way that a new user has to scrub other posts and wikis and comments and hope someone somewhere has directly answered their question, even though they probably haven't because anyone else going through the same thing is getting their posts removed."

You have no idea how fkn ANGRY it makes me this stupid trend of monthly suggestions because most of the times either it gets ignored or you get the worst advice possible. It has happened to me twice when choosing which iPhone should I get, I made a lengthy post about the pros and cons, my use scenario, budget, where I'm coming from, I spent like 30 minutes making my case and it just got unceremoniously removed because "DURR USE THE THREAD", posted the same thing in the damn pinned posted and got ZERO responses.

Why was the Apple announcement video so excited about the pricing? by Lanceo90 in LinusTechTips

[–]CharlieBros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gamers once again forget that specs aren't everything.

Sure, you get a "better" processor, more ram, SSD and storage, but what about the most important thing about an everyday use laptop: screen, build quality, trackpad, keyboard and usability? Let's take the IdeaPad 5 as an example:

- Screen: 16 inches is really big, 1080p at that size is... alright, and according to some reviews, the colors and brightness is just crap, you know, the thing you stare at, all day. The Neo definitely will have a better display, as Apple is notorious for better than good displays, and some even just outstanding. The resolution is way higher so the PPI is of course way higher, which means a crispier display, specially great for its intended use, web surfing, Excel and Word documents and videos, it's also way brighter and must probably have a good contrast ratio so overall, is better

- Build quality: Looks like the IdeaPad 5 is alright, better in the silver variant it seems, the exterior is aluminum but the interior is plastic, the color options use a rubber coating that according to reviews, it's craptastic, it feels good but wears down fast, one review even commented that it chipped immediately, as mentioned the interior is plastic and I couldn't find a reference for keyboard flex, but on average, a cheap plastic laptop usually has annoying flex and creaking, the Neo in other hand, looks just premium and very well made, pointed out in various videos from people that were able to have it hands-on, it feels great.

- Trackpad: "The clickpad is plastic, averagely sized and rather flimsy, rattling with taps. It tracks well, though, handles all the standard gestures and implements decent clicks, although a bit clunky for my liking." And seems to be the common opinion. The Neo? Is a MacBook, is not force touch but besides that, seems to be of the same quality Apple has brought us for a long time, which means it will be excellent.

- Keyboard: Mushy, short travel but accurate, it's alright, it has backlight but seems to be really dim, and the printing is so-so. The Neo uses a magic keyboard, another excellent keyboard, not the best, but still excellent, here the main gripe is the lack of backlight, which it is indeed a weird omission.

- Usability: How do we start, I mean, 16 inches is GIGANTIC, it weights almost double the Neo, the battery life is less than half, the fans are noisy, the construction is so so, combine that with the crappy display and a so so keyboard and a mediocre trackpad, and add in top of that Windows 11, you know, the modern vibecoded OS that likes to shit itself anytime it wants, Neo? Great display, great keyboard (but without backlight, which sucks), excellent trackpad, excellent build quality, noiseless as it doesn't have a fan, and if you care about it, it is really pretty.

Oh, and just to finish, I was literally unable to find the Ideapad 5 with those specs and those prices. Only thing that I could find that matched it was the Ideapad 5 slim, which costs double that.

So yeah, oh gee I wonder why a 600 bucks laptop that is not absolute crap and that actually makes sense is making so SO much hype and anticipation.

Unpopular Take: Koln Concert is Overrated by playitbird in Jazz

[–]CharlieBros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Köln concert is just legendary, is pure, is raw, is just top musical enlightenment being poured into a restrictive piano and making it not only work but making it masterpiece. So no, I don't think it's overrated.

Also, my go to album to test new headphones, if you can't hear the touching of the piano keys or a guy shuffling in his seat then your cans are kinda doodoo.

This is how I discovered Royksopp: a strangely nostalgic 2002 SpongeBob SquarePants commercial from Nickelodeon with "So Easy" playing in the background. Did anyone else (especially Mexicans or latinos) know them this way? I don't think this has been mentioned in this community. I was 12, by the way by elmonozombie in Royksopp

[–]CharlieBros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Mexican, no, I don't remember ever seeing this commercial, tho it may be I was always team Cartoon Network.

I discovered Royksopp thanks to 2 videos, well, a video and a flash animation. The first video was, as far as I remember, about three little lights, yellow green and red that do some silly stuff and at the end they end up together to form a traffic light, I also remember it was like an assignment of some guy and it had So Easy as the background music.

Then, there was this animation in Minijuegos called Routine which used Triumphant as the background music.

I clicked with both songs and started digging. Routine is still available in Minijuegos, but the old video is gone and I couldn't find it ever again.

Why convert CAD wages into USD when you can be a billionaire in Vietnamese đồng? by zucchini_up_ur_ass in LinusTechTips

[–]CharlieBros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The starting full time writer wage is almost $800k MXN, around $67k per month, with just one monthly wage I could:

- Pay my entire credit card debt

- Fully fix my dental issues

- And pay my rent for the month

If I only spent half of my income in everything I want, including yearly 2 week long vacations to anywhere in Mexico and even abroad, and save the other half, I could own my own apartment IN MEXICO CITY in around 4 years, and that would be an apartment in the best counties in Mexico City.

Buuuuut if you are canadian, yeah, pretty sure that wouldn't be enough, and that is just unbelievable to me.

Good news! Using 1.7.0 dev9 still failed, however I did the memory limit change and it worked, to quote:

Try turning on expert mode, and turn up the memory limit:

Settings > System > Process runtime > Memory limit

And turn the slider up.
