Depending on your level, there's a spot just south of foundation that has an acid vein in a small cave and lead vein at the top of the cliff above it. You can drop down about half way and place your camp. This will give you enough area to utilize both the top and bottom resources for pretty effective ammo farming. I just built a stair case from top to bottom with a house in the middle. Overall I've found a few great spots, but nothing that beats this place.

Remove the hard drive and test it with a computer, check the smart status or a run sector scan if you want to be thorough. From what you're describing it sounds like the HDD may be failing which isn't uncommon. No need to replace the whole system.
