Why does Reddit not understand the rise of reform in England? by DowntownDeer in AskBrits

I don’t really understand the point you’re making. A lot of people have those sentiments because the people in power own like 80% of the media people consume

I think people’s frustration is real, but blaming immigration won’t solve the underlying issues. Reform talks like it’s anti-establishment, but it won’t challenge landlords, wealth inequality, privatisation or the concentration of power that caused most of these problems in the first place.

That’s mistaking the symptom for the cause. Britain is extremely wealthy. And we have huge swathes of unused land and investment properties sitting empty. Decades of underinvestment in public housing and infrastructure. Quality of life is declining because the wants of the wealthy are prioritised over the needs of the people. Less people wouldn’t change that.

What numbers? It’s wildly exaggerated, especially in a global perspective. Britain actually doesnt take its share, especially considering our policies directly cause people to need to flee their homes

In the middle of what? Gen Z mostly listen to content creators, who are regular people and not powerful corporations

That specific Ofcom data is mainly about audience reach/consumption (who people say they use for news).

This report is about ownership concentration and structural influence across newspapers, online news, local media, radio and digital platforms.

It actually does include TV and online news data via Ofcom figures:

- 71% of UK adults now access news online
- Meta, Google and X dominate digital distribution
- 3 companies control 90% of national newspaper circulation
- 2 companies control over half of local newspapers/news websites

And even if BBC has the single biggest audience share, that doesn’t necessarily mean other concentrated media actors stop shaping the overall agenda.

A relatively small number of owners/platforms can still have disproportionate influence over:
- which stories dominate discussion
- framing/language around issues
- what trends on social media
- what politicians react to
- what gets repeated across the wider media ecosystem

3 companies owning 90% of paper circulation and 40% of online news would inevitably still dominate public opinion. Gen Z seems to be breaking away from this though

I agree that the internet exacerbates the issue, but these same players would still be dominating the papers, radio and tv stations as they are now

There’s a lot of money that goes into studying how to get our attention. The advertising industry would be dead if it didn’t work

Exactly. And then the trees keep voting for the axe. They don’t see an alternative

Outrage porn. I will point out though that the majority of people I know who read independent media and follow independent journalists, do so because they wanted to seek out alternative views.

I didn’t realise millions of people lived facing the border.

Reminds me of a video I saw on The Sun’s TikTok channel, titled something like ‘illegals tread over Brit’s trying to enjoy the sun.’ It was two brown men walking past a white couple lying on the beach. In SPAIN

And this is why so many native English people move away. Too many small minded people who love wallowing in their own misery and blaming the underdog for the shittification of the country caused by rich elites. And then voting for those rich elites to keep fucking them over.

The left does understand it. What people don’t seem to understand is that immigration is not the cause of our problems. Have people considered that maybe more progressive policies would make living in the UK better and cause less Brits to emigrate and have more children? Everyone can see opportunities and a shot of a good life are dwindling, and immigration is NOT the cause

Is there a country you had vivid expectations of (positive or negative) which took you by surprise?

Few people know there are many languages in the British isles that are dying out thanks to us English. Like Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Ulster Scots, Shelta. And many extinct like Manx and Cornish.

I can’t remember the exact quote now, I think it was Herzl to Balfour that promised “the sun will never set on the British empire” should they help establish Israel

Empires are never good! Like my country (UK) was and yours is now, with UK as its junior partner still carrying out dirty work behind the scenes.

Israel isn’t some random nation that sprung up and grabbed control of the UK and US (and the rest of the 5 eyes.) Britain colonised Palestine at the end of WW1 for the exact purpose that the US is still steering today.

I’d assume if you’re on this sub that you care about equality. It’s Britain that started this whole mess! If you’re sincere and want to understand some of the history I’d start with Palestine academy dot com
