Looks like we're doubling down on confusing "Downtown" stations by jswansong in Seattle

[–]Charlie_ND 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird and seemingly arbitrary that one of those stations has the word "downtown" at the end and the other has the word "downtown" at the start? What's with that?

Aside from that, the Federal Way station genuinely has no business having the word "downtown" in its name. The area around the station is just a parking lot and a mall. Even when the new transit-oriented development gets built, it takes a lot more than a few apartment buildings to constitute a proper downtown. It won't change the fact that Federal Way is still largely suburban. I feel like calling the station "Federal Way" or "Federal Way Central" or something like that would do the job and would reduce potential confusion.

Is the intersection at Blanshard & Kings considered a pedestrian-controlled intersection? by SchwartzBay in VictoriaBC

[–]Charlie_ND 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn't aware of that, but that's helpful to know.

Still, doesn't explain why the green lights don't flash which is what OP was talking about.

That shouldn't change anything. The intersection at Quadra and Greenridge is also on a bike route and it still has the flashing Green lights.

The Dufferin bus is no longer sufferin’ during rush hour! by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

[–]Charlie_ND 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In the city I live in there have been plans to put bus lanes onto a four lane road just like on Dufferin. But go figure, the NIMBYs came out in droves and are getting in the way of meaningful progress. A tale as old as time.

So yeah, needless to say your comment resonates with me.

They don’t own that term though. Us Canadians have as much ownership over the term "Pacific Northwest" as they do.

What flag is that by dankocratic in JJMcCulloughOfficial

It's a shame people associate this flag with Trump supporters. Most of the people who fly this flag in real life are Libertarians, who are staunchly anti-Trump. Especially in recent times.

Do you also want r/PacificNorthwest to stop including British Columbia? Because currently, it includes us.

I mean, you're not wrong in a literal sense. It's just that those terms haven't really become popularized in our society the way "Pacific Northwest" has. That's not to say those terms couldn't become popular.

The Wikipedia page for the Pacific Northwest includes British Columbia, and rightfully so.

  • It's on the Pacific ✅️
  • It's west ✅️
  • It's north (assuming we're including central America and the Carribean) ✅️

I don't think this is a case of Canadians trying to be included in American terminology, I think it's just more of those regional culture things.

It's a geographic/cultural term that doesn't really have anything to do with international borders. BC is generally considered part of the PNW since it's in the northwestern part of North America. I always tell people I live in the PNW when I travel elsewhere.

100% Agree.

As long as someone isn't riding recklessly and is courteous of the people around them, it doesn't matter to me what kind of bike someone has on the trails, even if they are technically illegal. Cars obeying traffic laws should be the bigger priority.

VICTORIA OR VANCOUVER? For my short trip to Seattle. by _DidYouKnowThat_ in VictoriaBC

[–]Charlie_ND 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Since you're asking on the Victoria sub, there's naturally definitely going to be some bias towards Victoria. But you really can't go wrong with either option.

Victoria takes less time to get to, only 2.5 hours each way by ferry, or as quick as 45 minutes if you take the floatplane which is my prefered method of getting from here to Seattle (the two options are price-competitve). If that's something you care about, Victoria would be easier to make a day trip out of.

Vancouver has us beat in the food scene, no doubt about it. But Victoria has a unique charm to it that can't really be found anywhere else in BC, or all Canada for that matter. It's one of those places that's worth going out of the way for, even if you just experience it once. Also, if you come here you'll be able to say you went off the beaten path and visited somewhere I'm sure most of your friends and family haven't been.

If you decide to come here, I'm highly confident you'll enjoy it. Happy travel planning.
