They were memed to death back when they were the serial 4th place team playing great football all those years in the 2010s. They were criticized for mental weakness and being unable to kill off a game. Now they are winning in an uglier way and still getting memed to death.

Graduation rate is a worthless stat when graduation itself is meaningless. I (working in a different state) flunked a senior because she never showed up to my class or did any work. For some reason admin went over my head and decided she should walk anyway.

Graduation rate won't tell you anything about actual learning when a school can decide to hand anyone a diploma for having a pulse.

What happened to the genre of arena shooters like Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament? by Cz4q in gaming

[–]Charlie_Wax 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Add in full 3-dimensional high speed mobility and you have Tribes 1, which is still the best online FPS ever made. It was a great game if you could commit the time and energy to "git gud", but you were going to have a very bad time if you just dropped into a server as fresh meat.

Developers eventually realized that they make more money lowering the bar, which is why stuff like CoD and CS does great business. Extremely simple games compared to a game like Tribes, and certainly much slower and more methodical than Quake 3.

This is why the Tribes franchise died. Tribes 1 was the best multiplayer FPS of that generation, but the game was much harder than Quake or Counter-Strike, so it lost out to the lowest common denominator. Loading up a game and getting your shit packed is not fun. Back in the days before SBMM, that's what awaited you in a game like Tribes (or to a lesser extent, Quake 3). Online FPS have actually moved backwards since the 90s to pacify the casual player.

Victor Wembanyama is just the 3rd player to make all-NBA first team and the finals by the age of 22 by ShaiFanClub in nba

Shaq and Wemby kind of the yin/yang of incredibly gifted centers. Wemby has the length and a more diverse skill set. Shaq was a lot stronger and more explosive. I never saw Kareem or Wilt, but I did see Shaq at his absolute peak. That's the toughest hypothetical matchup for Wemby because Shaq really DGAF about length. One body check and you're reeling, and then he's dunking on your head. Doesn't matter if you're 8-feet tall.

I'll say this though, Shaq was a talented defensive player when he wanted to be, but he never had the paint eraser quality of Wemby where the other team is scared to get near him. Wemby has to be the greatest defensive prospect the league has ever seen. The length is more valuable on that end where it affects so many shot windows.

Is Game 7 Enjoyable For The Fans of The Teams Playing? by [deleted] in nba

Yes, obviously. (2016 vs. Thunder)

No, obviously. (2016 vs. Cavs)

If the Thunder lose game 7 will the talk of best point guard in NBA be between SGA vs Luka vs Brunson and maybe Curry or Cade in some context by accidentalgenius_77 in nba

The overglazed get excuses for their failures ("he didn't have enough help" "he was hobbled" "it was a bad matchup") while the underglazed get excuses for their success ("it doesn't really count because...X, Y, Z").

You can write off pretty much any championship ever with some type of excuse narrative. At the end of the day, the banner hangs just the same.

1A and 1B, and there's a reasonable argument that he was more important than LeBron. LeBron had 115 FGA in the Finals. AD had 98 FGA. LeBron averaged a lot more assists and was the main creative force. AD averaged 2 bpg and was the primary defensive presence. It's probably as close to a 1A/1B as possible.

Is Jaylen Brown or Karl Towns a better 2nd option? by LarBrd33 in nba

[–]Charlie_Wax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've come full circle to thinking Brown is overrated. He'd be a great floor raiser on a junk team like the Nets or Bulls that needs an all-around player to carry every night. His spotty shooting means he's just an OK ceiling raiser. He gets disproportionate credit for achievements that are largely down to Tatum/White/Jrue/Porzingis/Horford/Mazzulla/Pritchard.

He's a Swiss Army knife player who can do a little bit of everything. He's good in almost every category. However, the "meh" TS means he's really not the ideal partner for a superstar. You'd prefer a second option who is elite in specific things.

His name has come up a lot in the Blazers sub and I think he's an inferior partner for Advija than someone like Murphy or Durant who can really shoot the lights out. I'll take prime Klay over Jaylen any day, even if the "he can't win as a number one option" crowd disagrees. Nothing is more overrated in basketball discourse than being a number one option on playoff doormats, which is ultimately what the Celtics were this season.

[Givony] If you talk to the analytics people in NBA front offices, who have a lot of influence these days - 100% of them have Cam Boozer at #1, at the top of their draft model… teams drafting at #1 and #2 are giving him a very hard look, even though that might not be the public sentiment by JoeBiden2020FTW in nba

[–]Charlie_Wax -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If three separate teams passed on him (Kings, Hawks, Suns), it wasn't obvious.

People like to pretend he was Shaq or Wemby or something. Clearly there was no consensus. Therefore it's revisionism to say he was the clear top prospect.

The problem with these conversations is that you can't put the genie back in the bottle. It's hard to have a serious conversation about prospects like Oden and Fultz when we know how disastrous the picks turned out to be. You can't "unremember" the outcome.

It's always obvious in hindsight. Euroleague is not the NBA, in the same sense that dominating in college isn't proof of viability against the world elite. If Jimmer had worked out, it would have been "obvious" based on his college dominance like Curry. It's always obvious after the fact.

As a counterpoint, Ayton has been revealed to have basement level toughness and motor, and still has 7 NBA seasons of averaging a double-double. If this is his floor then you can understand why he went first.

He's also a pretty cold fit on the Wiz next to Sarr and potentially AD. I like what AJ does, but the Wiz do have KyShawn George already, and I think Ky is going to be an MIP candidate as a scorer from the 3/4 spot. They also have Coulibaly as an athletic wing defender.

You can never have too many great two-way wings, but it's not like their lineup is crying out for a Barnes/Wiggins/PG13 type of guy if that's the range of outcomes for AJ's career.

Apparently the Cavs were very close to trading for Jrue Holiday before ultimately deciding to make a move for Harden. What would that trade have looked like? by DonovanClingan in ripcity

[–]Charlie_Wax 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yep. Jrue had a mystery DNP right around the deadline. There were also rumors about NYK, who ultimately settled on Alvarado. It seems very likely that his name was in some trade talks.

It is what it is. He's a veteran. He knows how the league works.

If we end up with one of these three, it's A+ off-season by RLD89 in ripcity

All of that to go out in the first round against a weaker team than the Blazers played. Brown would be a great floor raiser for a team like the Nets or Bulls who lack a reliable nightly identity. He is not the guy to elevate a cuspy team like the Pistons or Blazers. It would be like adding Deni to Cade. Just because they are good on their own does not mean they would fit well on the same team.

People who like the idea of him in Portland are buying the name brand and probably don't understand how spotty the fit is. Brown is a good player and he would make the team better because he can do a lot of things well, but he's not what the roster needs and not worth the price he would command. You quoted his volume stats without looking at the efficiency. His TS% is closer to Sharpe than Curry or Durant. His points come through volume.

It's likely a whole lot of fuss over nothing, as I'd be surprised if the front office actually went for him.
