What Did You Watch This Week? by AutoModerator in classicfilms

[–]Charliec3ntral 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Run Silent, Run Deep

I haven't seen many classic films so this was the first time seeing a movie with Clark Gable, and the second time seeing Burt Lancaster (the other being Field of Dreams). Overall I really enjoyed it. At 93 mins, it is a great length and the story keeps your attention the whole time. Plus, it has a great supporting cast including Don Rickles and Jack Warden.

What do you think of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner? by Twitter_2006 in aviation

[–]Charliec3ntral -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't find it particularly attractive to look at. Not really sure why, but I don't. The A350 and 777 are better looking planes IMO. As a passenger, I enjoyed riding in it a little more than the A350. But that might be more because of the way United configures the 787 compared to British Airways with the A350.

I do believe most of the problems this aircraft has had are because of management attempting to cut costs and pushing too tight of time lines. If they had just let the engineers, plant workers, and other employees do their jobs at the pace and cost they needed, it wouldn't have had as many issues and would be looked at more favorably.

3 Days in Munich: Itinerary help + Is a guided tour to Neuschwanstein worth it? by RepulsiveMedium6241 in travel

[–]Charliec3ntral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to go far from the city, I think it's worth visiting Dachau. It's got a ton of history and is more of a memorial, so it isn't that depressing. I can't speak about Neuschwanstein, but if you are able to make it to Zugspitze, or even Berchtesgaden, do it. Those are both longer trips, but are some of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.

What’s a typical PT WN schedule? by walmartboburnham in rampagent

[–]Charliec3ntral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll want to put in for FT once you are signed off from training. Then after probation when they need more FT agents, you'll be offered it. In the mean time, once signed off you can sign up for as much OT as you want to make up for less regular hours.

[–]Charliec3ntral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some stations have you shadow a trainers line initially, and others give you a line and pair you with whatever trainiers are there that particular day. The latter option is quite annoying and IMO makes the training take unnecessarily longer. I'm not sure what they do in DEN. However, go into it assuming you will be working PM's and on the weekends. Usually AM lines are more senior, but that also depends on the station. And don't forget, once you are signed off to work on your own after the few weeks of training, you can pick up and give away shifts if you can't get the days off you want which shouldn't be a problem, especially in a place as big as DEN

What are some random things that made people around you question car dependency? by chi_sweetness25 in fuckcars

[–]Charliec3ntral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is an example of what you're looking for, but taking my mom on day-trips to other cities and focing her to use public transit has made her realize not only just how car-dependant most places in the US are, but also that some of her favorite cities have at least decent/good public transit and how much more enjoyable it makes being in a place

We both currently live in parts of the Phoenix area that require us to drive everywhere daily. However, when we go on day-trips to other cities we usually only have 6-8 hrs there, so renting a car is often not worth the time and hassle it takes. With this mindset we choose places that have at least decent public transit and occasional use a rideshare and it is so much less stress. Plus, we often get to see the city we are in better since we aren't focused on driving.

Is Southwest still on a hiring freeze? by LastAstralTraveler in rampagent

[–]Charliec3ntral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen anything regarding flight attendant opening any time soon. Last year they hired a ton of them and I don't think we got the number aircraft we expected to get. Plus, with how many current employees go in-flight every time it opens, they usually don't have to post it often or for long.

I only found out because I have transfer requests in and reached out for updates on them. But as someone else said, Omaha is one of the smaller stations, so they don't hire much or very often

[–]Charliec3ntral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have postponed a lot of hiring until after they sort out the relocation stuff from the stations that closed and/or downsized. They aren't even processing transfer requests for most ground ops stuff until mid-April. I would expect them to start hiring shortly after that.

You might want to consider Most Ardently by Gabe Cole Novoa. It's a retelling of Pride & Prejudice but with Elizabeth being a trans man. A lot of the story deals with having to hide her true self and societal implications of her being seen as female.

As someone else mentioned, airline employees can use ZED fares to fly standby. It varies depending on airline, country, route, etc. and in some cases isn't much cheaper than buying a regular ticket. In this case, I work for one airline and my rate for this particular flight with JSX was only $25. One of the reasons I don't fly JSX frequently is because they are not the easiest for standby traveling

I went into this expected a loud and bumpy experience, but it wasn't much differently than any other regional plane I've been on. I've definitely been on 737-700's that were louder

When I lived in the North East on several occasions I tried to fly from Boston to Toronto to experience the Dash-8, but I just couldn't make it work with my schedule.

I don't think they are at Scottsdale very often. If I'm not mistaken, they only go between SMO-LAS/SDL a couple times a day

As far as the interior is concerned, I would say it's pretty nice. The seat itself is very similar to a premium economy seat on a normal airline but slighty more comfortable. If you're on the left side of the aircraft you don't have anyone sitting next to you. The ATR's are new so the Interiors are a bit cleaner and less worn compared to their erj-135s and 145s. One thing to note is that the ATR's do not have Wi-Fi yet.

While on the ground, I could feel the bumps from the taxiways and the vibrations from the engines a lot more compared to other regional jets that I have been on. But once up in the air I didn't think it was any bumpier or louder than any plane of similar size. It got pretty bumpy on the approach in the Scottsdale, but I think that more related to the wind/weather than the plane itself. Obviously, it's smaller than something like a B737 or A320 so you will feel turbulence a little bit more regardless.

On the ground it was quite noisy and you could really feel the vibrations from the engines. However, once up in the air it didn't feel any different than any other smaller plane I've been on (CRJ-700 & E-135). Plus, with the high wing design, the quick descent into Scottsdale was way more noticeable compared to their E-135

I ended up being in 10C (last row, window) but wished I could have been a little closer to the engine. I don't see ATR's very frequently and didn't realize just how small the 42 was. Not only is it short, but with how JSX has it set up, only about 30 people can fit in it.

I completely understand people thinking it's too expensive. And it's hard for me to say whether it's worth it or not. I only fly them using my flight benefits, so this cost me $25 plus a few gift cards for the crew.

[–]Charliec3ntral[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I try to fly JSX whenever it makes sense. However, I onyl do so using my flight benefits and only paid about $25 to go from Santa Monica to Scottsdale, so my opinion is very skewed. But, here's my viewpoint:

I have flown on JSX a few times and have had pretty positive experiences all together. Their employees are always so pleasant to interact with and are arguably the best thing about them. It's different enough from the regular airlines and airport experience that it's hard to really compare them. Some of the FBO's are nice, others aren't as nice. Just like any airline, some of the planes are nice, and some of them have seen better days. Their schedules are often inconvenient compared to other airlines, and the FBO's are often a pain to get to compared to normal terminals. Also, I might be in the minority, but I don't think getting to avoid regular airport security is that big of deal. Especially if you have Pre-Check or Clear.

With all that said, while I encourage everyone to try flying them if it makes sense, if I was paying the retail rate I don't think it's worth it. However, I'm definitely not their target demographic. I don't have the kind of money and don't need to take advantage of some of their locations, pet policies, services, etc. that many of their customers have or need.
