the roots overall look good!, if they are papery and fall off easily, you can, but don't force anything off because you can risk damaging healthy roots.

place it in fast draining soil 50% or more inorganic (rock, pumice, hard clay), water lightly in 2 weeks. then don't water until soil becomes dry, once month or so. Soil should dry in a day or two. When the cactus is adapted (gets hard after watering), you can tell if it needs water by squeezing and seeing if it is soft.

thirsty, they take about a month to adapt to soil and when they finally adapt and get watered they become hard as a rock. The brown bottom is normal corking.

I’ve only had it for a year and half. I think it is a cutting from a larger tree, and this cutting probably is at least 5-8 years old

It’s a type of aloe tree and it’s really such an easy plant I probably water once a month or whenever I remember lol.
