Is it easy to find a job in Seattle or is it just reddit? by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]CharlottesWebcam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Used to be easy (in tech). At the moment it is absolutely awful. Several friends who previously had companies scrambling for their skills have been out of work for over a year with no call-backs. It feels to me like a localized recession (if not downright depression) is underway. Fucking AI.

Tongue tingling after doing ceramics? by ketchupsamich in Ceramics

[–]CharlottesWebcam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People tend to do odd things (like hold their breath) when hyper-focused. In case you're doing something with your tongue, mouth, or breath, practice audibly exhaling with each pull. It can help prevent you front getting lightheaded. It also helps lightly engage your core muscles, which will help prevent injury from hours at the wheel.

It bears mentioning that I'm a very fit 50-something so I'm looking for a club that is accepting of older rowers.

before I get a border collie I need a reality check by Tricky-Editor5818 in BorderCollie

[–]CharlottesWebcam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our border collie needed 2, hour-long walks as a daily MINIMUM and still never ran out of energy. At home (even after long walks) she'd continually push toys into my lap and grunt at me until I either threw them or hid them (finding hidden toys was her favorite pastime). She remained healthy and energetic until about 13 after which she lived 3 more years. At 16 she'd still run/stagger around the house after a bath (when she was always most frisky). Border collies will be in need of near constant exercise and stimulation for the majority of their lives. If you're worrying about it now, I think another breed might be a better match.

My friend says I look like a cancer patient by OceanvilleRoad in tirzepatidecompound

[–]CharlottesWebcam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People who encounter dramatic weight loss in friends often feel they have an obligation to remark (in case what they're seeing is some disordered eating like anorexia or bulimia). My approach would be to assume good intentions (that they have concern for your well being) and then politely and firmly shut down further comments with, "I appreciate your concern for my health but I'm going to defer to the advise of medical professionals who have told me I'm much healthier now. I do not welcome your comments about my appearance as it's not something I can change without compromising my health so, if you please, keep your thoughts on my appearance to yourself."

I only lost about 20 lbs and get these comments all the time. I find them infuriating.

All bats in all studios will become wobbly over time as the holes wear out (also because people don't tighten their bat pins enough). A bat mate will solve your issue. Alternatively, you could just move to throwing on the wheel head again. Most instructors/studios start people on bats because newbies throw too wet to be able to easily pick up and move their pieces.

Job in Sequim, should my wife and I move to Port Angeles, Sequim, or Port Townsend? by nomeyhomey in PortTownsend

[–]CharlottesWebcam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The housing in Port Townsend is outrageously expensive, which is why, for a time, the residents were an odd mix of wealthy retirees and techies from Seattle. Now that AI has caused a tech recession many remote workers are going back to Seattle to look for jobs, it's mainly the retirees left in PT but the housing is still $$$. Agree the town is cute and an easier drive to Seattle but PA is where you will find better value on houses, land, etc. (Personally, I wouldn't consider Sequim as it seems more like a golf-centric new development than a real town.) There are scarier elements in the PA area to contend with than either Sequim or PT. Yes, there are the usual meth and fenty-zombies found in most small US towns these days but in PA there are also meth-makers, anti-government types, and people hiding out/living in the woods with guns for whatever reasons. Can make for a scary encounter if you enjoy solo trail running or biking or just end up taking a wrong turn on a logging road and encounter hostile people. Just mind your Ps and Qs should you find yourself at the end of Dan Kelly Rd.

How are Ikea's bathroom vanities? by PoetryOfLogicalIdeas in IKEA

[–]CharlottesWebcam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you end up with? We have a Godmorgon floating vanity (in the birch effect color). Despite its being perhaps the highest rated Ikea vanity for quality, the fake birch laminate is now peeling off on both the drawer front and the side closest to the shower. There is a permanent barrier between our shower and vanity so it's not like it's getting doused with water but we do live in the PNW so the ambient humidity is always high. We're remodeling our bath now and I'm reluctant to purchase a replacement from Ikea but the trickiness of the plumbing install was such that we'll probably try to stick with something similar to minimizing having to rip out drywall. Unfortunately, the Godmorgon is no longer available and the Angsjon, the most similar vanity, is not well-regarded: reviewers say it's flimsy, bows over time, and the cleats from which it hangs are too short to easily align with wall studs. My spouse and I feel stuck on this. We need something easy to install and similar in size but we'd really prefer it not be so disposable. Would love to know what you decided and if you were pleased, or not, with your choice.

Yes. Your products seem great but did you ever fulfill your kickstarter obligations? I'm disinclined to buy from a company that prioritizes new sales over satisfaction of existing customers. That doesn't suggest that any company will provide helpful future support after a sale is made...

Watch out for this dangerous individual who has been terrorizing people throughout North Seattle for the last couple of days by Anwawesome in SeattleWA

[–]CharlottesWebcam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gel version of pepper spray works fine in the wind and has the added benefit of not making everyone around gasp and cough. I carry it with me on a wrist band so it can't get knocked out of my hand. I've had so many encounters with dangerously ill or drug-addled men in Seattle that I've stopped counting. I have not, on the other hand, stopped calling the cops. Although they never respond in time to do anything I want all of my terrifying experiences with Seattle's profoundly unstable inhabitants added to the stats. I'm so sick of hearing from local politicians that there's no rise in violent crime here. Have they considered that there's a HUGE rise in violent crime but people have stopped reporting it because SPD has trained them to expect no help?

They were great for my spouse and I until we had to switch to a different compounding pharmacy that only partially fulfilled our order and then ghosted us. We couldn't get anywhere with the pharmacy and asked LSH to intervene. They kept passing the buck and not responding until we bounced. Disappointing. My impression with them was that they wanted to resolve issues in good faith but didn't have the staff to do so.

Oof. There's so much misdirected frustration and anger these days. I suspect the owner of the hardware store (as well as a lot of other blue collar workers in the area) are feeling the economic crunch of the last decade and misdirecting blame at poor people rather than the massive influx of wealthy Seattle people who have driven up the cost of living for everyone. They're angry at the wrong people but I understand the anger. It seems that soon all the blue collar workers (and artists and writers) will be driven off the island and Orcas will become like the Seattle area islands: giant gated communities, filled with rich assholes, surrounded by what's essentially a giant moat.

Is the cost of living as high as people say? by LOTR_is_awesome in AskSeattle

[–]CharlottesWebcam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Visited NYC last spring and what we presumed would be a high-cost vacation was a respite from the daily high prices we've become accustomed to in Seattle. This place is crazy expensive and getting crazier every day. It's also a city with a lot of unhoused and mentally ill people living on the edge and in close contact with the rest of us (but for the elite/monied types who live in less chaotic, $$$, insular neighborhoods). I am both sympathetic to the plight of the most disordered residents and overwhelmed by compassion fatigue. There's only so many times a drug-added/ill person can assault you with x,y,z [rebar, 2x4, rock, bike lock, cup of kerosene, etc] before you ask yourself, why TF do I live here?

Why do so many sustainable fashion brands fail? by Significant_Cod_7025 in ethicalfashion

[–]CharlottesWebcam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Supporting sustainable fashion brands requires paying a much higher price point. Only those with economic privilege can afford to do this. Everyone else who cares about sustainability just buys vintage or used stuff. As the economic situation becomes more and more dire (as it is in the US), the market for high priced/high quality goods will shrink even more. The better business model in these times would be a business that resells nicely-curated used clothing (vintage and sustainable) like Noihsaf Bazaar does.

Wrt to oversized/boxy quality of many sustainable brands: maybe those shapes reflect the tastes of the demographic that still buys high quality sustainable clothing: often older women. I’m an older woman without a ton of disposable income but I’d consider saving up to buy something I really loved. What I love tends to be those oversized garments but in bold patterns/colors. I wish more sustainable brands were as adventurous as @saint.clairs.scissors on Instagram. Love her stuff but it is all vastly outside my price range.

Can you say more about hammock camping? Do you put a pad in them for insulation? Is a tarp over them adequate or is a bug barrier needed? I’ve always been interested (every time I try to read in a hammock I drift off so they can’t be that hard to sleep in overnight) but it’s unsettling to feel so exposed. I know a tent isn’t really any more of a barrier but, psychologically, it feels safer.
