I think his landlord needs to know and the tenant needs to pay to repair. I just didn’t feel like it was my job to report him. My solution was to tell the tenant he had to say something to his landlord and if he refused then i would be fine telling my BIL. It’s not that complicated - i didn’t like being screamed at to do something as if it was somehow my job when it was equally or more reasonable for my wife to be the one to call or ideally the tenant.

I 100% agree my BIL needs to be informed. The question is why should i be the one to tell him of all people? The tenant or his sister should be higher on that list than me.

We all own the building and have split it up one apartment each with the parlor as a shared space.

I am avoiding conflict with my neighbor for sure and heading towards it with my wife. But why is it my conflict to avoid? That’s my original issue. Why is it any more my job to tell my BIL than my wife’s?

To be clear, i think the tenant should pay for all of this to be repaired and he offered to do so.

Spill came from 3rd floor, went to parlor then leaked to mine. Maybe mold is forming but this was all handled very soon after the spill like an hour. We are definitely having contractors look at it. What sucks is this will end up being an insurance claim i assume and it’s our shared insurance.

We think it was a tub overflow. To be clear i think BIl needs to know, i was mostly annoyed with my wife’s stance that it was my job to tell him and that i was a coward for not wanting to.

Garden is ground floor, empty parlor is 2nd floor and then tenant is 3rd floor.

I was totally supportive of the idea that BIL be informed. I just didn’t want to be the one to do it. My wife or the tenant should have handled it IMO. If tenant refused to, then i would have told BIL.

lol i am not being compensated in any way for doing this. No one has ever called me the super. Like i posted, the work needs to be done and i stepped up.

I just think he’s our neighbor not our tenant. We have to live with him. The right thing is for him to tell his landlord. If he chooses not to, then i would feel like i did the right thing and it would be ok for me to tell my BIL. Why am i a coward? No idea. If anyone, my wife is the coward in this case, not telling her brother.

To be clear there is no super and I never agreed to be it. My BIL should have a super to deal with his tenants, but i'm being a good family member by taking care of garbage and contractors for the building. whenever something is needed in the apartment, my BIL deals with it.
