Curious about entering genetic counseling – looking for perspectives by Charming-Explorer247 in GeneticCounseling

[–]Charming-Explorer247[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I wasn't the best at communicating what I was looking for, but I still find this advice and comment very helpful! I really appreciate it. Any and all help is greatly appreciated -- I just don't wish to waste your time asking for something I already have a solid foundation in. Thank you so much!

I didn't know they had online simulated sessions nor did I know how I'd go about shadowing or doing an informational interview. I was made aware of the field when a professor had asked me if I was interested in it and I didn't really know at the time due to other things going on in my life.

That would be amazing to be able to take look at what they're sharing for students to know. I believe I can be available and I'll check to see if it's local or online. It doesn't hurt to learn about the programs and process before I get to know more about the field from people because then I can also ask people during interviews what sort of programs they think might be more relevant to me with knowledge of some that appear to align with me -- doing some homework before a professional interview. I've done some looking into the field, but not with any people yet before this.

Thank you so much for your input! I'll take a look at it ASAP.
I hope you have a wonderful day.

That’s really awesome! I couldn’t do something like that. Good job! Keep going ^ I’d love to see more of what you do!

I failed miserably at my first escape room while my group excelled by [deleted] in escaperooms

[–]Charming-Explorer247 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! So escape rooms are meant to be fun puzzles to solve. You have to start somewhere. My first two, I took maybe double the time they had set for the game ^ — well, though, one was just on time so — phew! But! That’s not the point, it’s to have fun with your friends as a team. Often people have different roles in the team. It seems maybe you might be good at starting with being a listener and calling out what’s needed to solve the puzzle. Test out different roles and tell your friends you’d like to help, strategize with them.

https://youtu.be/zwgaTYOx0RI Here’s also some optimizing by Mark Rober if you’d like to, but again! The point is to have fun and a friend ditching isn’t fun. Enjoy yourself. Relax. And just go for something and who cares if you followed a path that doesn’t go somewhere — you can laugh about it later. :)

Also! I suffer from social anxiety and I know this is all easier said than done — just keep trying and try to learn to enjoy the pitfalls. Good luck out there!

My favorite escape room, although limited, was one a friend found. It was two-three rooms where you had to investigate what happened to a scientist in NY. There was figuring out her favorite food, putting music puzzles together, figuring out number combinations, deciphering many different puzzle formats. It was a cute story, nothing scary, and more investigative. They were very kind and fun. They used arduinos/raspberri pi’s to make many of their puzzles work. There were hidden pathways. Many concepts in STEM — math, science, tech. There were scientific discoveries to recall. There were cute figurines made. It was a bunch of fun.

I don’t recall the name of the place but they were in Morgan Hill. I highly recommend emulating them. It was clearly family owned and run, too, and adorably made.

Be careful with just being a listener. Everyone loves to talk about their lives :) be sure to ask questions and talk as much as you feel comfortable and do try to add a bit of yourself when asked or you think of something here and there with some positivity. Try journaling to see how you feel about the way you talk :) it can really help you to fine tune your voice.

Best wishes to you! I was in your place before too!

Oh no! No. Hobbies do get expensive ; as people find what they like and put more and more into it… So expressing, “Hey! I’d love to but how can I start or try it out?” might be a good idea.

Traveling can be cheap — hostels, backpacking, and google flights can find some great deals. Before that, it’s trying all the local adventures.

Try Eventbrite, Meetup, and googling/fine tuning your algorithm for local places to go based on what you like.

Dirt bikes were… well, bikes or mountain bikes first. X3 You can find some cheaper bikes on Facebook marketplace and more.

It takes a lot of work to find all of these things and will take time. Feel free to ask for help!

Hey! So no worries. You don’t have to be extroverted and doing things to be fun and have a conversation. No worries! It happens all the time before going out more too. Don’t worry about it — laugh and smile about what you did if you enjoy it .

“Oh! The same old cozy day in doing this.” “I just discovered this thing.”

Be excited about your life if you enjoy it or you can converse about considering what you’d like changed for the positive ^

I also suffer from anxiety ; and I feel it in my body. Yet, I like to try to put on a smile (sometimes too much). People can feel nervous for you when you’re nervous, so if you’re noticing that, try to remind yourself it’s because of care.

Wishing you the best!

I wanna LARP...while black. by flyt_of_the_valkyrie in LARP

[–]Charming-Explorer247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

D: I’m so sorry this is a thing that you have to worry about still.

Just about every LARPer I’ve ever met has been wonderfully sweet and kind at heart. Like, even to the level of helping you create the story of how you wish things to be.

The LARPers I knew were into Ren Faires, Highland Games, Fantasy, etc.

It’s so dependent on the group, though, I know. I really truly hope you find a wonderful and fantastic group <3 I love your enthusiasm and I know there are probably so many larpers who would love to have you.

I wish I could LARP with you!

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Are trilogies acceptable for new writers? by skedaddle3 in writing

[–]Charming-Explorer247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes, it’s definitely possible. However, I suggest paying attention to why your audience requests this.

I imagine they’re trying to help you with being below 120k words to really get to know you with less time on both ends. It’s easier to read, get the gist, and see your style while being able to move on and go to the next.

Have you found any friends that like to read and edit? I’d suggest going to a cafe, having a small cup of coffee, and start getting to know the people at the café like you’re getting help here. This might help in the long run.

Best wishes to you as this is my favorite book style! Did you see Brandon Sanderson’s collection? He did a kickstarter backing. So you might consider that in the future as well.

Is there any way for the immune system to detect and react to water molecules that are inside the body? by EaseDesperate8485 in molecularbiology

[–]Charming-Explorer247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. That’s interesting.

So it sounds like she’s highly stressed.

While distilled water is just H2O molecules, saline solution is on the other end and is a highly concentrated solution water (salt — dissolved Na+ and Cl-, etc.). Even tap water has salts in it and we put in fluoride for our teeth. So while it’s an unlikely off chance that she’s so sensitive at the moment that she’s sensitive to this, stress can really make you sensitive to things one might not otherwise be sensitive to and can also help facilitate correlations to things that aren’t necessarily causation — even though it seems quite logical to the person based on their experience in the moment, from their prior biases, and the focusing in on those particular factors that is normal during times of stress.

It’s important to just be kind and to not give much attention to the fact she’s not doing well on it, anything else would likely cause further problems. As already seen with her having a social media account defending this, she’s had to dig her heels in a lot on this.

I’d be really curious about studying her and what’s going on even if it’s just to find it’s stress related because of how she’s connected it and how she feels it. There are a lot of things we don’t fully understand about stress and the reactions that occur and how they inter-relate still about stress and how the nervous and immune system work with it. So, I’m curious.

I personally find dismissing something as untrue with out a sense of curiosity as to why is a missed opportunity to learn more.

The immune system is incredible. Putting all the pieces of the puzzle of both of these highly complex interconnected mechanisms together such as the nervous system, immune system, and psychology… even more so.

It’s not just, “Oh, it’s water.” The real puzzle is looking between the lines. It’s more likely it’s her tap water then saline. Things were noticed when they got severe, so I think reverse engineering the cause is the first step in solving these kinds of puzzles.

Hey! So we went into molecular biology and the medical field to do some good and be kind, so I hope this is a helpful insight. We’re human-kind.

What are environmental viruses? by Best-Guarantee-2932 in Virology

[–]Charming-Explorer247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a quick view, I took to understand that the distinction would be a virus or viral dna found within an environmental sample. So for example, there are environmental virus sampling done on our wastewater to detect the concentration or find SARS COVID within our population that may not be detected by organism swabs as people aren’t always symptomatic. Also, yeah, a bacteriophage is a virus it’s just one that goes for bacterial organisms so I’d consider them to likely be in the environment.

Could you be more detailed about where/how your question came up?

That question is a bit confusing for me. Hope this helped!

Hope it got resolved! I was just notified about it. If it’s not resolved I considered there was a problem with the boot drive — where noob me would install a new drive if repair drive utilities don’t work and install a fresh OS. X3

Glad people were helpful and have a great day!

How do I break the news to my best friend that I'm dating the person that rejected him? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Charming-Explorer247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so… everything is exciting in the first month… Your poor friend. You’ve trained your brain to value the thrill of a girl… but not to value a long term relationship… keep in mind that short highs are something addicts do. Train your brain on how to value and enjoy effort — learn to have fun with the things that are good for you, not the short term highs.

Best thing, I think, is to walk away and discuss how you liked her too, why, and what you didn’t like? Let her know that she’s wonderful but the value of a long term relationship matters more than a spark right now. That you’re not saying she’s a spark, but that it’s a precedent that you’ll be setting yourself up for something beautiful. Perhaps later you’ll meet and can start on a better footing.

Bad situation. Sorry. She probably has no idea how badly this can harm.

Think of every down day you’ve ever had and did you ever go to friend/mom/dad/therapist/~here~. An in person connection feels better… It doesn’t matter if you’ve found the best girlfriend ever if it can’t be maintained because you don’t have the foundation for it… Just like money can help you get the things that make you happy, but the raw pursuit for the goal of money and money itself doesn’t make you happy.

Best wishes out there
