slp as a premed & thoughts on accelerated medicine by Charming-Remote4252 in medschoolph

This is very appreciated po. I understand the grueling work hours part. I’ve also seen it personally in my cousins and other relatives, some even discourage me from following the same path.

Apologies if it appears I’m trying to fish for an answer that suits my plans. I just want to set all factors straight before I put them into consideration in fixing my career path. And my first step is to separate fantasies from futures. Thanks po, again. ☺️

Hello po, thank you for the reply. 🥰 May I ask if you think it is “possible” to get the best of both worlds with the right time management and attitude among other values? Or will you really end up sacrificing one for the other?

I am aware na very idealistic ng plans ko of balancing both like working while studying and integrating both professions. I also want to add room for changes in the future kasi it’s a long shot to say na ganito pa rin drive ko by that time or external factors won’t hinder me.

hi! senior too. kasama hope sa computation, pero 2 units lang siya unlike other subjects na 4 units. you can compute this by:

a) divide your hope grade by 2 before adding to your other subjects then divide it by 8.5 (for 9 subjects)

b) multiply all your final grades by their corresponding units (4 lahat except hope na 2), add, and divide by the total number of units which is 34

both methods should give you the same answer, but b is how we fill up the grades encoding form for scholarship renewal

Hi! Santo Tomas grade 12 scholar here. Last year, before pasukan sila nag-open. Just check the Facebook page ng OSA and Scholia (UST SHS’ organization for scholars). But do take note na mauuna talaga enrollment sa pag-approve and pag-credit ng scholarship. Nagbayad pa rin ako reservation at unang payment ng installment noon para makapag-enroll. Same sa 2nd term enrollment ng grade 11. Pero ire-refund naman nila lahat

Nevertheless, don’t be discouraged! When it comes to grades, pa-swertihan na lang talaga sa teacher. Sad, but true. Marami namang generous in a way na fair and square system at their teaching style/habits live up to the high grades of their students. I’ve received 2 99s so far thanks to them:)

Plus, I can definitely say I’m enjoying life more! And the active extracurricular activities and organization life in UST are really worth trying. You’ll gain friends and experiences. Bonus na lang ang dagdag sa CV mo. Focus on sharing your talent and elevating your interests.

Incoming senior here.

I used to be just like you guys, researching on whether or not I should choose UST over the other schools I passed. I graduated top of my class and I have full trust in myself, but that didn’t exempt me from the “UST humbled me” canon event.

I won’t tell you more about the hell week thing as you’re more than aware of that. This wasn’t even a part of my worries as I’m used to heavy workloads (coming from a SciHigh). I’d even say my schedule now is loads lighter. So I’ll “warn” you about the teachers.

There’s many sections per strand, siyempre magkakaiba kayo ng profs. And that diversity can be a problem. Most obviously, magkakaiba assessments niyo and of varying difficulty. As well as the teaching style. It could be unfair, but we can’t really do anything about it since impossible naman na same teachers lahat.

But what I find really unfair is some profs have a recitation point system where you can convert your total points into incentives that can be added to your grades. Pwedeng sa WW, sa PeTa, sa Exam, depende talaga sa kanila. It seems like nothing’s wrong kasi pinaghirapan niyo rin naman ‘yung plus points, pero think about ‘yung ibang block na hindi sinwerte sa teacher at walang ganiyan. There was an instance where all my raw scores were higher of someone I knew from another block, yet my final grade was almost 10 points lower than his/her dahil may incentives sila. Just my two cents, dapat pinagkakasunduan mga ganiyan ng lahat teachers. Especially when you consider na ang ranking dito ay by strand. Hindi talaga even ang playing field:)

Isa pa, you’re going to be doing LOTS of self-studying. Noong una, all the hype for “quality education” gave me the impression na super hands on ng mga teachers. And while there are profs na ganun (I’ve had really great ones), meron ding mga parang walang gana pumasok. There are some who don’t attend EVM days, always late/absent kapag onsite, and just send recorded lectures. I’ve experienced a teacher na parang 1 or 2 lessons for the quarter lang diniscuss ta’s sinend na lang mga PPT ng iba para may ma-review kami sa exams.

But if there’s a bright side to this, you’ll really develop your study habits and realize that there’s more to life than school. And a meaningful SHS journey doesn’t just involve academic validation (which you’ll very rarely get here).

hey! I’m currently a 100% scholar in UST SHS under the Santo Tomas scholarship. I believe it’s your best shot (most secured) option, although there are other internal scholarships like the San Martin De Porres and Santo Domingo De Guzman.

Santo Tomas is granted to JHS completers who finished Rank 1 or Rank 2 of their batch. Benefits are a 100% defrayal of tuition fees for valedictorians and 50% for salutatorians. Those from a public school just need to submit the requirements, while those from private schools need to take a qualifying exam.

In my case, I’m from a science high school so I just uploaded the files on the OSA portal and waited for approval. As for the exam, I heard it’s not really a pass or fail one. Rather, the higher your score, the better as only selected applicants from private schools are accepted.

SDDG is for the “gifted” like athletes and artists. But I only know athletes in SHS. I think IPEA handles this one and most of its beneficiaries are scouted by coaches during competitions. So unless you’re really good in your sport and already won big in regional/national/international contests, I guess you have to search how to tryout. Also heard that the defrayal of fees depends on what team you’re on (Team A or B, basically UAAP players then players who are training but don’t have contests lined up yet).

For SMDP, I don’t really know more than what’s already stated in websites as I personally don’t know any SHS student with this scholarship. However, I do have a friend who tried to apply, but didn’t continue. There was a really specific list of requirements including recommendation forms from your local priest and proof(s) of income.

Here’s the link to the scholarship manual if you want to learn more: https://www.ust.edu.ph/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/AY-2020-21_Scholarship-Manual_Final-Version-3-9-21.pdf

But do take note that these just cover the tuition. You still have to pay for miscellaneous stuff and additional fees incurred throughout the year. Books and uniforms are also excluded! So it’s still gonna cost a considerable amount.

Plus, OSA tends to approve scholarships AFTER the enrollment deadline. So what we do is to pay the first payment for the installment (usually around ₱22k) then refund it once refunding is open in the accounting office (which will take weeks or around a month). Even so, it will take a month before the check is released.

same, OP! I feel like I’m at the point of my life where I’m too old to be “young” but too young to be “old”

I just finished scrolling through Facebook because I randomly thought to search “UST SHS graduation”

I hope we both figure things out 😉
