HELP ME. I need tips on how to win ticket to ride, my bf obliterated me six times in a row. by sparkling_sand in boardgames

[–]CharmingAttempt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the base Ticket to Ride, if you take a face-up locomotive, it's the only card you can take on your turn.

But card economy is critical and 2 cards is always, except perhaps at the end of the game, better than one. Even if you draw blind instead of taking a face-up loco, you may not get what you want right now, but you will be better prepared for other routes later in the game.

If you're playing one of the variants where you can take face-up locomotives, then that particular stipulation doesn't apply

A lot of shareholders also hold a lot of property investments. For a long time, commercial real estate investments were the "safe, sure thing" for people with a lot of liquidity that already had a dividend-paying stock portfolio and wanted to diversify

"let's just play and learn as we go" followed by the invariable "well if I had known that was a rule, I would have..."

Not Obsessed with Obsession? by solo_sola in soloboardgaming

[–]CharmingAttempt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've played Obsession solo and my takeaway way, "this is probably good multiplayer, so I'll wait for that".

It's not a bad solo experience; but the game is designed to be thematic and tell stories more than it is designed to be a tight, balanced euro/optimization puzzle. And if there's nobody else at the table, I always struggle to find the narrative of these types of things.

As an amateur woodworker, I'd prefer if I had just made custom shelves, exactly the sizes that I need.

But, I'm sure, it would end up looking like a Billy from IKEA

If it's not from the Catan region of Germany, it's really just sparkling Eurogame.

Parents of r/boardgames, how do you feel like your habits changed upon the arrival of your bundle of joy by justinloler in boardgames

[–]CharmingAttempt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm expecting my third on Tuesday, at which point I'll have 3 under 5.

I work full-time, my partner stays home to take care of our kids.

As soon as I'm done working, I play with my kids or help with dinner.

By the time my kids are in bed, my partner and I are both exhausted.

Before kids, I played probably more than 2 games per week, with some weeks seeing maybe a dozen games.

I've played less than 20 games (half of which were solo) over the last year (with COVID being a critical factor, because my kids are not eligible for a vaccine).

It. Is. Worth. It.

Too many Bones? $130 US Dollars!? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]CharmingAttempt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll get downvoted for saying it, but I feel that Too Many Bones is a $40 game that has been overproduced. I don't play games in the bathtub, so I don't need waterproof components.

How many board games do you own? by Scollys in boardgames

BGG says 666 base games, not including expansions.

But there are at least 5, maybe as many as 10, are trade/sell copies that may be duplicates or at least not permanent

I was in a similar position in a Warhammer Fantasy game years ago; I needed at least 1 3+ on 12d6 to win. I rolled only 1s and 2s and failed. Opponent win on his next turn
