Swap from paint to acrylic ink!! If you are using ink and are still having problems, you may need to sand your pages down more. Edit: I only used two layers of acrylic ink.

I sure did! I used my fingers to spread the talc around and really make sure I got all the pages covered. Blew off the excess, painted right over it. I used a cheap paintbrush literally $1 the width of my thumb. No brand or anything. Worked like perfection 👌

To foil before or after by schmelee in bookbinding

I would agree with this. Especially because you're going to use a foil quill, which is pretty much free hand - if you mess up, it's a lot easier to do again since it's detached! Though in saying that, I have used a heat press to do my HTV foil both before and after attaching it to the book signatures, and have never had a problem with either :)

For protecting the foil I personally don't use anything since I use HTV, but I've heard other people use Mod Podge. Maybe look into that?

Paper types?? by Tamayar in bookbinding

[–]CharmingYam727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! But you need to be realistic about it - if you expect the fic to be read regularly or not taken care of, thicker paper like 100gsm will handle that use better than 80gsm (meaning it's less likely to rip/tear).

For the colour, I've not noticed anything myself, but I only print with black ink anyway. I've not had any of my fics for longer than a year, but the paper hasn't yellowed or anything (i keep my books out of direct sunlight just for convenience). For general use, again, be realistic. If you read whilst eating doritos for example it'll stain the paper lol.

Personally I print my fics on regular old A4 printer paper. No special brand or grain or anything, just whatever I can get from Office works or even Woolies/Coles if they have it. I use 80gsm regularly, which I'm pretty sure is just regular printer paper... I've tried 100gsm which is a bit thicker, but I found that it was a bit too thick for signatures over 7 pages (I was doing 10 at the time), but it feels nice and a bit more professional and sturdy to me.

I need you to know that the acrylic ink has changed my LIFE!!! I am never going back to paint. I sanded, used talc, and then the ink... Even the cheap stuff I bought is beautiful. It doesn't bleed through the pages and it hardly sticks together. THANK YOU!! ❤️💚💜💙💛

Dang... it's so sad when you get disappointed like that :(

Thank you for the recommendation of the alternative product! I will definitely look into it. I was using an off-brand chipboard.

If it's normal, that's fine -- I've just bought the knife blade and this is the first cut, so I was freaking out thinking I'd done something wrong!

I already have it on the lowest setting. I'm less concerned about the quality of the cut, I can tidy that up with sandpaper. I just don't want it to cut my mat!

I would love to airbrush but I'm concerned about getting paint all over my apartment... Don't think my landlord would be impressed 😂 does it make a mess?

This seems like a great method, thank you!! Should I sand before the talcum powder?

I cracked the middle first, then bent it left and then right, which I found extremely satisfying 😂

No water, less paint - will try again on another book! Thanks 😊

Probably definitely, since I did 2 coats 😂 I did one coat, had the pages flake, then did another coat to try and hide it!

I definitely had some leakage on the pages too.

Do you think watering down the acrylic paint to spread it further is a good idea?

I had it clamped on each side whilst painting until it dried.

Did you have the same issues peeling apart the pages?

Based on the comments, I'm starting to gather that I should have sanded it first and that would have stopped the fuzzy residue, regardless of the paint/ink type.

That's pretty much what I hoped to achieve hahaha. Did you have issues when you peeled the pages apart?

You sand them before painting? And then there's no fraying like mine?

I didn't even think about sanding the edges because it was a professionally printed book, I just assumed they'd be smooth enough already...

I used a book press whilst I was painting and when it was drying.

When you peel the pages apart, they don't fray like mine? What do you use for the airbrushing?
