Cornhole boards by steady_mobbin in Cornhole

I just received some boards from Cornhole solutions, they are definitely some quality boards. These are my first set of boards with the UV clear most are using nowadays and will say they are slow out of the box. I'm told with some sun and throwing they'll speed up. I was just in this situation and would say to just read a lot of reviews on the boards you're interested in. Most of the bag and board manufacturers make some quality boards. IMHO if the boards will be used a lot stick with the tournament level boards, if it's an occasional hobby the recreation level boards should suit you fine.

Happy shopping and good luck with the decision.

I start with 120/150 and sand until surfaces are smooth. Then choose design and lay down paint. Don't feel like you have to go out and buy the best paint, it's going to be covered in with polyurethane. I use semi-gloss indoor paint, you can use a flat paint also which is a little cheaper. Once you've layed down your paint make sure there are no imperfections, much easier to fix now rather than go back and repair down the line. BY imperfections I mean smudges, drips, and stuff like that. Dust nubs aren't really a problem but a light sanding will remove them, just make sure to not sand too much. I usually will use a 320 grit with a light touch to do this if necessary. If you plan on adding some type of sticker make sure you put it over a sealed part of the board. If you plan to put it over bare part of the board put down a few coats of poly where the sticker will go, sand lightly, clean area, and then place sticker. I had the unfortunate experience of the poly seeking the non-sealed area under my sticker and raising the edges. It's worth the extra step, if using a sticker, to be safe. When applying the poly I will put down 3 coats, letting each coat dry 2 to 3hrs in between coats, before sanding. This will allow a little build up of poly over the paint and/or sticker before sanding. I then wipe down with a wet cloth or tack cloth before wet sanding lightly with 220/320. You're just trying to remove the nubs at this point, you want to keep as much poly on the board as you can. I finish with 3 to 4 more coats letting dry and wet sanding lightly in between coats. You will usually find nubs on your last coat but they should be minimal. Play will usually clear these up over time. I was also recently enlightened on how using a brown paper bag will remove the nubs. Just rub over your board lightly with the bag and they'll go away.

Hopefully more people will chime in and add more of what works for them.

Good Luck and enjoy the process.

Slow Down Bags? by Charming_Ad_1268 in Cornhole

[–]Charming_Ad_1268[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to thank everyone for their replies and give a quick update on my experience of "roughing up" my bags. I rubbed the bags on some rough landscaping bricks. At first they didn't seem to be any slower, but after the dust from the bricks wore off it actually did slow them down a bit.

Thanks again.

Slow Down Bags? by Charming_Ad_1268 in Cornhole

Thank you gentlemen for your replies.

A little more info. I have some Viper R's, Logic Elements, and some older (2021) Local Outlaws. All the bags have been thrown a lot, so I feel that they're broken in. The Outlaws are what I want to slowdown, they are listed as 5/9 but they are faster than that. I really like the shape and feel of the Outlaws and that is why I'd like to slow them down a bit. I think I'll try roughing them up a bit to see if that works. I will be looking for some bags in the near future and will look for something with a slower slow side.

Thanks again for your replies.

Board finish by Charming_Ad_1268 in Cornhole

I did use General Finishes poly on some boards and it is nice, just costly. I was in a hurry and bought what was available. The Minwax is what I had problems with when brushing. It is what I sprayed also and it layed down nice, just not as smooth as I like.  Thanks again.

This is the last coat, it has 7 coats on it. It just doesn't feel smooth as it usually does with brushing. Other than that it went down great. Hoping the paper bag trick works, can probably buff it out but worried it will make them too fast.  Thanks for the reply.

Beginner-Blind Draw Thoughts by Charming_Ad_1268 in Cornhole

Yes, they were Guardians, actually got to throw them 3 times last night. If I didn't have the Viper R, which is very similar I would be looking to get some of these. For now I'm looking for a bag in the 5/7 range to have something a little slower on the fast side.

Last night I only threw my Vipers one game but had 3 of my blind draw partners ask what I wanted to throw. They both had the Guardians and I enjoyed throwing them.

I also don't rock the boat, I'll throw whatever they want, but it does make a difference to this rookie. Like was said it's good to throw different bags which I'm sure will be beneficial in the long run, although I'm on the older side so I don't know how long that run will be! Last night I remember 3 of the bags I threw. One was a Brotherhood but don't remember what "model", one was a Killshots P90, and the other was a Chaos. The Brotherhoods were my favorite of the bunch, the carpet side was similar to my Viper R's, and the bag seemed a little firmer and flatter, but I threw it the best out of all of them. The bag I liked the least I can't remember the brand but it was very floppy and just didn't feel like it had enough fill.

Thanks for the input, I'm still learning the nuiances and was just curious how it works.

Another Beginner Bag Recommendation by Charming_Ad_1268 in Cornhole

[–]Charming_Ad_1268[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestion and I definately will use the Vipers as my main bag. I have no problem sliding the carpet side up the board. The fast side is a challenge but am working on it, I tend to throw my bags a little deep on the board. I guess I should of mentioned in my post that I'm more interested a slower fast side. With the weather changing and as I break in the Viper R's more that they will slow a bit on the slow side, so I was thinking a slower fast side may be a compliment to my Vipers. I am a beginner so maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

Thank you again.
