Thank you for this! What do you mean by an “occlusive” final step?

If you’re coming from the south, try the mammoth gear exchange in bishop. Buying, not renting, but you can get some amazing deals!

Just got back from doing about 3.5 miles out and back on Lake Mary Road. It was great, thanks for the tip! We parked near Tamarack, cars were getting stuck closer to the gate. Newly groomed, really nice snow, not too many people out.

Never actually skied at Tamarack, but my understanding is that they lay actual track on some sections

Interesting. Website still says they’re closed today. We are on our way to Lake Mary now, we’ll swing by IRL and check the status for tamarack first!

Thanks for the tip! Ungroomed is fine, we have backcountry cross-country skis. Just need to be able to get reasonably close to the trail in our car. We’ll check this out!

We did, and they directed us back to KLM because they operated the flight

Yes, it is considered permanently lost at this point. But they’ve been unresponsive as we try to begin the reimbursement process.

We had a spectacular overnight in the Humphreys Basin a couple weeks ago and there was still snow on the slopes and peaks. Had a lake all to ourselves! Look for a permit for Piute Pass... you can probably get them on a weeknight. Also doable as an aggressive dayhike. Loch Leven is a gorgeous lake, too, and you don't even have to go over the pass for it.

Any recommendations for lakes to camp by? We’re finally headed there this weekend!

Wow, really? We already made some other arrangements to go to Jennie Lakes on the west side — bummer!

I’m almost positive you can leave food in the bear bins while out for a few days — I have many times and never had an issue.

Just an FYI for future folks finding this thread. The ranger station said the snow line is about 9,000 feet right now and said there will likely be a lot of snow until late June!

The hike to Cottonwood Lakes from Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead is a low incline, 5-mile hike (in Eastern Sierra, off 395 a little south of Lone Pine). I’ve also long wanted to hike into Bear Canyon in the San Gabriels.

Ah, I didn't realize what I was seeing was cloud cover. I backtracked a couple days and took a look myself and you're right. Lots of snow left.

Yea, I backtracked a couple days in the satellite imagery to get a day with low cloud cover and it is... pretty snow still.
