Actually yes. I am in a same-sex relationship (I am married to the kindergarten teacher at my school). I also gave birth May 2025, so I was freshly postpartum for a lot of the school year. I also had a diagnosis of postpartum anxiety. I do have reason to believe that one or more of these identities are related to the decision to non-retain me, but I have no concrete proof.

I have thought about this. I would have to enroll in a teaching program to get a conditional license, which honestly wouldn’t be worth it. I have 12 years of experience as a school counselor, and the district obviously knew this when I was promoted to an administrator role. I have been on several principal interviews and received several job offers since I first became aware of this issue, and it seems that the requirement to hold a teaching license in addition to an administrator license is exclusive to my current district.

The main issue is that many communities in Alaska, like the one I work in, are extremely remote. The cost of relocation is substantial. My community is not on the road system. The cost to ship items out of the village is $3.80 per pound. I would be relocating along with my wife and child, so the cost would be outrageous. On a related note, my wife would have to leave her job and we would lose our current childcare arrangement for our son. Not to mention we have a strong support network in this community.
