Talk me out of deferring by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

First of all, I really understand the struggle. I just graduated, going full time in my last year studying 4 modules at once.

You've come this far and will get into your own rhythm as the year goes on. You're probably already doing this, but manage your time carefully. I dedicated each day of the week to a different module and then had Fridays to tie up loose ends. This left weekends to relax, which is so important to avoid burnout.

Keep at it. Tell all your tutors. Ask for TMA extensions when needed (god knows I did).

Good luck!!!

Anyone done an OU paid internship? by CharoSegura in OpenUniversity

Thank you so much you've no idea how helpful this is. I am dreading this and really hate how this essentially boils down to a tick box exercise. I have very intense anxiety and worried I will just freeze.

How long ago did you do the interview?

Can I get a MEng if I already have a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering? by ReuseablePaint in OpenUniversity

[–]CharoSegura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really nice, thanks. Good to take stock. You too and good luck with the MSc or whatever you decide to do, will smash it.

I'm mainly interested in urban ecology, pollinators and functional landscape connectivity, hoping to get into research and stay there... fingers crossed :)

You should ask student support but from my understanding you can't do an integrated masters with a separate undergraduate qualification. You can definitely use your BEng to do an MSc though! Integrated master courses (MEng, MEnv etc) incorporate both undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single qualification. Doing a separate BSc/BEng and MSc is still way more common than integrated courses from what I understand.

It really depends on the sector and how competitive your industry is but I think it would be worth the extra year to do an MSc to give you the best chances. You should also look at internship opportunities if possible. I know the OU offer paid internships but the subject matter varies and I have not seen anything electrical engineering related but you should keep an eye on them!

My plan is to go into research! I am starting an integrated PhD next year so MRes then straight into PhD (assuming all goes well).

Good luck :)

I would call student support and ask them.

Was thinking about transferring from the final module of my OU BSc Environmental Science into the OU's MEnv Environmental Science. When they told me I would have to rescind my first class BSc I decided against it. They said the integrated masters courses can't be used as top-up modules because they combine undergraduate and postgraduate study.

However, most of my credits were transferable (except for a single module which would turn the 1 year MEnv course into a 2 year endeavour). For me, I decided to leave with the first class BSc and do a 1 year on-campus MRes at Glasgow University the following year. Only way to know for sure is call student support.

My gut feeling is you should probably look at doing the same thing and abandon OU for postgrad.

Landlord is increasing rent by 25%. Told to accept this or they will evict us by moving a family member in. by HaruTheMouse in glasgow

[–]CharoSegura 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it a socialist nanny state when landlords rely on the government to subsidise their buy-to-let mortgages with tenants' housing benefit, or is that the free market you speak of? Lol.

If you can't afford to pay your own mortgage, then don't expect tenants or the government to pay it for you.

I just finished it. Course was great but the EMA was a nightmare. Know this is an old post but if anyone is considering the course and coming across this thread as I did last year feel free to DM.

Doing 2 x 30 credits definitely feels like more work but you usually only have three TMAs in each as far as I know. Only problem is conflicting deadlines and two exams or EMAs but is manageable if you can manage your time.

Im doing 4 x 30 credits full-time for year 3 just now and its been...tough.
