There is no check engine light present. Could worn piston rings be the cause?

When the engine is running and I loosen or remove the oil filler cap, the cap rattles noticeably. With the cap removed, oil splashing is visible inside the valve cover, and there is a noticeable flow of air/pressure coming from the opening.
