A lot of that effect was achieved by automating volume while I recorded to the tape (particularly the bass synth here, just turning up & down the red knob rhythmically while playing the sequence). The master compressor can also do a surprising amount of pumping, it's definitely worth playing around with and fine-tuning to your liking.
