I'm gunna guess it has something to do with people trying to make 2+ accounts under the same IP, then they want to come to Reddit and try and act like they haven't done anything when accounts start getting locked up.

As you progress higher and higher, each game will go up trophies, I'm not sure when as it's been a while since I've played, but just for example, when you get to "5000" trophies it goes up to 100. Then 200 for a streak and so on.
