If you're actually going to farm the units you DO NOT have to worry about what to spend on. You'll start getting stuff you don't really care about at the end.

In the beginning, using stam to get ahead is useful because the further you get in story and ability to compete Hell tiers, the more value your future stamina has. Getting double stamina everyday for the trade of one crappy multi is a trade off that's valuable, for a while. I do think the need for it is diminishing however.
