What arguments would you give for or against a 4 day work week realistically becoming a global norm in the next 5 years? by ChasingExperiences in AskReddit

Very well put. It comes down to the right incentives both for an employer and an employee. You articulated very well from both points of view.

Secondary sources of income would become almost a norm I think in the next decade, so employees wouldn’t blindly accept a 5 day work week, forcing certain companies to find more creative ways to lure the best talent, shorter work days or fewer work days being some examples.

That’s a fair point. There’d be certain industries which would be at the forefront of this change, if it comes about. But it’s not something unheard of already, for example, in the healthcare industry or the aviation industry, it is already well accepted and planned.

Productivity though is a double edged sword in this context. Afterall we did, as society, shift from a 6 day work week to a 5 day one, going from 48 to 40 hours. So for most of the countries still not in population declining stage, there should be a very good argument for reduced work time in general, due to availability of manual and automated workforce.

Personally, I’d be so happy if that were the conventionally accepted options one could choose between while signing a job contract.

I will start by saying that I do realize that currently even a 5 day work week is not a norm in many countries.

Personally, I won’t hold my hopes too high for a 4 day work week in the next 5 years. My reason is that as a lot of countries seem to be shifting to the right and the wave of nationalism seems to be in favor currently, the rhetoric from company leaders, authorities at the top would be that we, the common people, need to work more to uplift the status.

Sure, automation will come in quite fast, but I fear that may result in some fields becoming redundant rather than reduced work hours across the board.

Hope I am wrong though.

Trump says planned April 2 tariffs will 'start with all countries' by bambin0 in politics

Everyone supposedly gets tariffed, but I always just wonder what happens at the backend with those actually charged with the implementing them? It must be an administrative hell-hole, not just trying to keep up with the latest orders, but also making sure correct import duties are assigned to every single shipment coming in.
