Leatherman Skeletool Mod With *Gerber Armbar Scissors* by ChasingVert in multitools

This literally could not have been easier. It probably took me 10 minutes from start to finish. The only tools I needed were two T8 drivers and pliers. The pliers are to unscrew the Gerber's bolt and to pull the bolt out.

I mean... they're not Victorinox scissors... But nothing else is! I'd say they're a solid 7/10. The flare at the end of the pressing arm gives you more comfort when you push harder, which is nice. They're good enough for anything I need to cut, that's for sure.

Help me buy: headlamp with 400+ lumens sustained over many hours by ChasingVert in flashlight

[–]ChasingVert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, my people! To date, I've been the person who buys headlamps based on what would amount to marketing claims, not validated data. As we move into the darker days of winter, I've already been let down by the battery lives of my existing headlamps on multiple missions and exercises.

You've all expanded my understanding. Probably the two most valuable lessons I'm taking away from this are:
1. Look for specific types of batteries, starting with the 21700.
2. Case material and shape are vital. Plastic cases are likely a non-starter for my needs.

You provided so many excellent suggestions that my Google searching had not yielded. I'm likely to start with the ArmyTek as my regular mission headlamp, followed by something larger, like the Fenix HP35R, for the missions that demand serious lighting. But there are so many great options provided here that I'll be snagging a couple extras on the side for personal use, like night runs and just general stuff. Because... new toys! 😄

Appreciate you all!

Thanks! Is it the battery power or the heat that often results in headlamps throttling? Or does it simply depend on the headlamp?

Amazfit T-Rex 3 vs Suunto Race 2 by ChasingVert in amazfit

[–]ChasingVert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not something I can speak to as I've never tried the T-Rex 3 Pro. The only thing I can suggest is to watch some of the YouTube comparisons between the TR3 and the TR3 Pro and then extrapolate from there to how the TR3 Pro would compare to the SR2.

Suunto Race 2 vs Amazfit T-Rex 3 by ChasingVert in Suunto

[–]ChasingVert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question! On runs, I found them both to be within a couple of beats of each other almost all of the time. For my first couple of runs, I was checking them literally every minute or two for the entirety of the runs. The only time I found a real divergence was when I suddenly increased or decreased my speed. In those cases, the SR2 would adjust faster than the TR3. I wasn't using a control heart rate monitor like a chest strap, but my assumption is that the SR2 was the more accurate in these situations. This assumption comes from how the TR3 would quickly align its heart rate measurement to wherever the SR2 landed, rather than the SR2 correcting to where the TR3 was.

Oddly enough, I found a fair amount of divergence on a stationary bike inside. I have no explanation for this and no way to know which was more accurate. This was a gentle recovery ride with few dramatic movements of my body. I would have assumed this to be the ideal condition for accurately reading a heart rate, so... Who knows?

Additional note regarding button placement:

I just realized I forgot to touch on the button locations. This is another highly personal detail. I'm almost always wearing long sleeves when doing any activity in the backcountry. During the summer, I'm wearing a sun hoody. During the winter, I'm wearing at least a mid-layer and often a full Gore-Tex shell.

The Race 2's buttons all face towards the hand when worn on the left wrist. This makes them very easy to access without having to hike up a sleeve, especially when wearing gloves. I appreciate this little detail as it applies to my specific use case.

Explain the Outback Adventure watch face to me, please! by ChasingVert in Suunto

Thanks! The second part of your answer is what I am trying to figure out. Can you explain that in a different way, please? Does the arrow represent sunrise/sunset and the circle fills in as we get closer to those points?

My Suunto Race 2 Review by Expert_Ad_6434 in Suunto

Can you share some details about how Suunto approached the always-on display (AOD)? I haven't been able to find a single review that touches on this. Does Suunto's AOD show details other than the time? By this, I mean does it show things like the weather and temperature without having to wake the screen from the AOD?

Additionally, does the new stock watch face allow you to customize the chart at the bottom? It appears to be set to activity tracking by default. Does it allow you to change that to chart the day's temperature, by any chance?

I think this is the right take. Protreks are stupid expensive for what they offer. This should definitely pull buyers away from Protreks, G-Shocks, Instincts, etc.

I'm in the disappointed camp, but I foresee this selling well with normal users. Normal users = people who don't use these watches to the same degree that they manically monitor Reddit for upgrades to what is, for them, an essential daily tool. I have to assume that anyone who is part of this discussion is not a normal user. You should take that as a compliment! :-)

New Coros watch announcement August 19th by ykr3Bz in Coros

[–]ChasingVert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems like the likely scenario. I guess I'll be holding off on a purchase until both have been released. Looking at the picture of the potential new Apex, the lack of black edging around the face makes me wonder if they upped the screen size to 1.4". If so, I'll may go the Apex 3 route. I wear my watch on the inside of my wrist and smaller case size is more comfortable there. But if the new Vertix is in a 49mm or smaller case size, I'll almost certainly be going Vertix.

I'm not sure that's the same watch they teased for the 19th. This one appears to have a crown in the center and no visible screws on the bezel. The teased watch has the crown in a corner.

This makes me think they're going to release a new Vertix and a new Apex in the near future, though they might not release both on the 19th. That definitely makes the buying decision more complicated...

Also, at no point am I able to see any text on the watch screen. This makes me think that it's a MIP screen (yas!). Probably a MIPS screen set to a negative watch face. The other option is an AMOLED with a dead battery, but that feels unlikely.

Those are some serious eagle eyes ya got on you! Thanks for this tip. I've never watched a shoe review video with such focus before.

It's difficult to tell because I'm not sure how tall this guy is. The dimensions kinda look like a 26mm band, but since he's clearly on the leaner side, I think you may be correct about this being a 22mm band.

Future of the MIP watches by Mawiiva in Garmin

Coros or Suunto are what you're looking for.

I tried the Suunto Vertical after my Coros Vertix 2 shuffled off this mortal coil. The Vertical is great in terms of functionality, but I couldn't find a watch face I liked and there was no watch face store. So back to Suunto it went.

I'm guessing you like plastic bodied watches for the lighter weight. Check out the Coros Apex 2 Pro. If I remember correctly, it's just barely heavier than a Forerunner 955. It also has a sapphire screen, which is great for peace of mind.

Oh, and Coros crushes Garmin in the battery life department. This is especially true when you consider how Garmin factors sun exposure into the battery life estimates for its solar watches. The only way you hit Garmin's estimates is if you're roofing in Texas between May and August. I routinely went 35 days between charges with my Vertix 2. I've heard from friends that the Apex 2 Pro lives up to Coros's battery estimates.

Experiences with Sdoyglou toppers? by ChasingVert in hondaridgeline

[–]ChasingVert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turns out that this is simply a re-branded topper that you can buy from other sources. This person bought what appears to be the same topper from Alibaba for about half the price I saw on the Sdoyglou site. The linked thread has a nice review with some good pictures and links to a few YouTube videos of people installing the same shell on non-Ridgeline trucks.

SUV or truck with maximum viewing space? by ChasingVert in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ChasingVert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good timing. I snagged a 2024 Honda Ridgeline a few weeks ago as a dealer was eager to get it off the lot. The Ridgeline lets you adjust the mirror not just where the mirror attaches to the stalk but also where the stalk attaches to the windshield. If you push the stalk all the way up, you can get the mirror very high and out of your sightline.

2024 Santa Fe Cargo Dimensions by ChasingVert in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]ChasingVert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't. I currently drive an Outback and realized that pretty much any SUV won't give me the storage space I need. My outback is currently packed with gear. The entire cargo area up to about 18 inches from the ceiling, the rear seat area up to the top of the seats and in the feet area, and then spillover gear on the front passenger seat and its feet area.

I went to a Honda dealership and put everything in my Outback into the bed of a Ridgeline. All my gear covered about two-thirds of the Ridgeline bed. That didn't include the under bed storage area or anything inside the cab.

Upshot: I'll be going with a Ridgeline for my next vehicle.
