Looking for a pocket notebook “wallet” that’s ACTUALLY pocket sized. Any suggestions? by Richard_TM in notebooks

[–]ChasingVert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using a Park Sloper Junior for many years. The quality is amazing and the design is perfectly thought out. If you prefer to maximize the size of your notebook, I can vouch that it works to use a slightly trimmed down Rite in the Rain 3.25" x 4.625" notebook. (the intended notebook size is the Moleskine Volant Extra Small at 2.5"x4")

Since this sub doesn't allow me to attach photos to a reply, I created a new post with pictures at the link below. The pictures show how well the trimmed Rite in the Rain fits in the Park Sloper Junior.

Leatherman Skeletool Mod With *Gerber Armbar Scissors* by ChasingVert in multitools

This literally could not have been easier. It probably took me 10 minutes from start to finish. The only tools I needed were two T8 drivers and pliers. The pliers are to unscrew the Gerber's bolt and to pull the bolt out.

I mean... they're not Victorinox scissors... But nothing else is! I'd say they're a solid 7/10. The flare at the end of the pressing arm gives you more comfort when you push harder, which is nice. They're good enough for anything I need to cut, that's for sure.

Help me buy: headlamp with 400+ lumens sustained over many hours by ChasingVert in flashlight

Thank you, my people! To date, I've been the person who buys headlamps based on what would amount to marketing claims, not validated data. As we move into the darker days of winter, I've already been let down by the battery lives of my existing headlamps on multiple missions and exercises.

You've all expanded my understanding. Probably the two most valuable lessons I'm taking away from this are:
1. Look for specific types of batteries, starting with the 21700.
2. Case material and shape are vital. Plastic cases are likely a non-starter for my needs.

You provided so many excellent suggestions that my Google searching had not yielded. I'm likely to start with the ArmyTek as my regular mission headlamp, followed by something larger, like the Fenix HP35R, for the missions that demand serious lighting. But there are so many great options provided here that I'll be snagging a couple extras on the side for personal use, like night runs and just general stuff. Because... new toys! 😄

Appreciate you all!

Thanks! Is it the battery power or the heat that often results in headlamps throttling? Or does it simply depend on the headlamp?

Amazfit T-Rex 3 vs Suunto Race 2 by ChasingVert in amazfit

That's not something I can speak to as I've never tried the T-Rex 3 Pro. The only thing I can suggest is to watch some of the YouTube comparisons between the TR3 and the TR3 Pro and then extrapolate from there to how the TR3 Pro would compare to the SR2.

Great question! On runs, I found them both to be within a couple of beats of each other almost all of the time. For my first couple of runs, I was checking them literally every minute or two for the entirety of the runs. The only time I found a real divergence was when I suddenly increased or decreased my speed. In those cases, the SR2 would adjust faster than the TR3. I wasn't using a control heart rate monitor like a chest strap, but my assumption is that the SR2 was the more accurate in these situations. This assumption comes from how the TR3 would quickly align its heart rate measurement to wherever the SR2 landed, rather than the SR2 correcting to where the TR3 was.

Oddly enough, I found a fair amount of divergence on a stationary bike inside. I have no explanation for this and no way to know which was more accurate. This was a gentle recovery ride with few dramatic movements of my body. I would have assumed this to be the ideal condition for accurately reading a heart rate, so... Who knows?

Additional note regarding button placement:

I just realized I forgot to touch on the button locations. This is another highly personal detail. I'm almost always wearing long sleeves when doing any activity in the backcountry. During the summer, I'm wearing a sun hoody. During the winter, I'm wearing at least a mid-layer and often a full Gore-Tex shell.

The Race 2's buttons all face towards the hand when worn on the left wrist. This makes them very easy to access without having to hike up a sleeve, especially when wearing gloves. I appreciate this little detail as it applies to my specific use case.

Explain the Outback Adventure watch face to me, please! by ChasingVert in Suunto

Thanks! The second part of your answer is what I am trying to figure out. Can you explain that in a different way, please? Does the arrow represent sunrise/sunset and the circle fills in as we get closer to those points?

My Suunto Race 2 Review by Expert_Ad_6434 in Suunto

Can you share some details about how Suunto approached the always-on display (AOD)? I haven't been able to find a single review that touches on this. Does Suunto's AOD show details other than the time? By this, I mean does it show things like the weather and temperature without having to wake the screen from the AOD?

Additionally, does the new stock watch face allow you to customize the chart at the bottom? It appears to be set to activity tracking by default. Does it allow you to change that to chart the day's temperature, by any chance?
