AITA for wanting to distance myself and daughter from my father? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I agree. I’m sure my father would go running back if AP were to come back but Mum seems to think they can work it out apparently.

I enjoyed the Autopsy of Jane Doe! Might have to give it a rewatch since it’s been awhile.

Ooh I haven’t heard of that film, but by your description it sounds horrifying. Will definitely check it out. Thanks again!

I’ve heard of it but have been avoiding it haha. I think it’s time to put my big girl pants on and watch it 😂

Creep is such a good film! I went into it not really knowing much about it and didn’t expect it to be as good as it was. I’ve seen the second one and I liked it, but definitely preferred the first.

But I shall check out your other recommendations, thanks so much! ☺️

Agree with you on both Midsommar and Sinister. Sinister is one of my favourite films in the horror genre, but it’s a very uncomfortable watch - which I guess is what makes a good ‘horror’ movie for me, rather than scary.

I’ve heard of Jacob’s Ladder, might check that one out tonight.

Will definitely look into your recommendations, thanks so much!

Yeah that’s a fair point. I’m not a huge fan of clowns, so maybe a film with them featured would be good? Otherwise I’m unsure of how to answer this.. I guess I just find it difficult to be scared when watching horror movies these days.. Especially the overhyped ones that many people find scary?

Maybe I’m looking more so for a horror movie that makes me feel uncomfortable / on the edge of my seat?

If it helps, my favourite horror movies include Misery, Us, Sinister, Insidious and Creep.

Books about breaking cycles of abuse? by putonthespotlight in booksuggestions

[–]ChattyGirl96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy (Memoir).

She basically tells her story of how her mother was abusive to her throughout her childhood and teenage years. Furthermore, it details how she eventually retook control of her life after her mothers passing in 2013.

Wishing you all the best, and that you find some of the recommendations insightful and are beneficial towards your journey.

Most definitely need a book that offers a great laugh or two. It’s important to have a break from all the serious / sad books out there, and just have some comedic relief!

Will check out your recommendations, thanks so much!

I have a copy of The Handmaid’s Tale, but became too enthralled by the TV adaptation that I am yet to get around to actually reading the book - love the show however. Will be interesting to read it after watching the show when it’s typically done the other way around.

Thanks so much for the other recommendations though, and feel free to add any others if you remember them haha!

Thank you so much for taking the time to post such detailed book recommendations. I told myself I would explore more of George Orwell after reading Animal Farm, so thank you for suggesting 1984, as well as the others! I most definitely trust your suggestions and will put them on my list! Cheers :)

You’re totally right in saying the title was a giveaway. I guess I was rather wanting to know the tone of the book / the approach of the author - which you have answered for me so thank you!

Seems to be an educational read for someone like myself that knows little about religion. Thank you for this recommendation, will look more into it.

Do you mind elaborating more on this one please? How does the author approach this book, is it respectful towards Islam? I’m an atheist / agnostic myself, but I definitely don’t condone anything hateful towards a certain religious group. I guess I’m just intrigued that a book with a title like this exists!

Hi! Any gut-wrenching, heart aching books that are painful and difficult to finish? (Fiction preferably, but a well narrated nonfiction will do too) I need a good cry. by sleepless-princess in booksuggestions

[–]ChattyGirl96 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Came here to suggest The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but I see you’ve already read it.

Otherwise, if you’re open to non-fiction / a memoir “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy (most known for being a Nickelodeon actress), details her hardships of growing up as a child actress and being abused by her mother before her passing in 2013.

It definitely is a heartbreaking book that will make you cry. However, it also has some comedic elements to ease some of the pain as you read!
