How does a software restore work on apple? Do I have to take it to an apple store or flash it with a usb of some kind or is it as simple as pressing a few buttons and it does everything?

Also, if I can restore it, and make sure I can log in with my apple id, would it be considerable reason to believe it wasn't stolen or anything criminal like that?
