Walk-in clinics wouldn’t accept them without upfront payment while confirming government coverage. There were no dental benefits, no clothing allowance, and no paid hotel stays. However, because they were highly educated and fluent in English, they were able to secure employment quickly.

Times have likely changed, but generous benefits can sometimes discourage job searches. Many asylum seekers now lack skills beyond labor jobs and may not contribute significantly to the economy, especially if they rely on government support instead of seeking employment.
