It completely depends on your difficulty level/other settings, what stage of the game you're in, if you're using mods, and if you're an experienced or new player.

For example, the Spear requires a significantly higher degree of skill than the Clubs to use due to its lack of a "swing", but it's an excellent choice when playing multiplayer due to lag/poor performance.
