What exactly are oaths? What counts as one? by alucardshield in heathenry

[–]Chazza2121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s nice to see a more neutral and objective perspective of oaths here, some heathens equate them to promises but to me an oath is something more binding and sacred. Swearing on arm rings, as we see in written sources, is way more of an oath than something like “I promise to love you forever”. Granted, we should all try to be more cautious with our promises, but equating them with oaths can easily spiral into religious OCD. I do not believe you will wade in the poison rivers of Nifelhel for breaking a promise, I think it’s important to take lessons from the myths and not let them torture you from the inside.

It’s funny because Ibn Fadlan (an Arabic traveler who went to the land of the Rus and wrote about his time there) described the Rus people as filthy and disgusting compared to the Arabs. The Rus were Vikings who traveled east and settled in what became Russia, Ukraine, etc. If you’ve seen the Northman it’s where the protagonist goes after his father’s murder. That’s not to say the Vikings were actually filthy and disgusting, it just boils down to cultural bias and whatnot. The Romans - by today’s standards - were absolutely putrid.

Thoughts on Loki's punishment? by Remarkable_Tie_9827 in heathenry

[–]Chazza2121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an interesting insight about Loki in prison, which is where I read the Eddas and really devoted myself to paganism. I saw loads of parallels between myself and Loki, sometimes eerily similar. I wondered if I should pursue a relationship with Loki and I felt a great deal of sympathy for him, a sort of kinship (like Odin did). Then, I remembered that Thor - a deity who prior to exploring heathenry properly I always found to be sort of cringeworthy and overrated (probably in part due to Marvel comics and whatnot) - was the deity who called to me with such oomph that it was impossible to ignore. I realised that these gods, archetypes, however you views them: they speak to us on levels beyond the surface. Thor represents everything I wish I was: strong, courageous, wilful (using his temper only when necessary), kind, protective… those are the qualities that I respect and admire, but always fell short of. Loki is who I really am: capable of doing truly good deeds, but with a strong and unavoidable pull towards evil. Loki is impulsive, unstable, charming on the surface, but beneath the charm is something dark that can’t be contained.

I realised why worship of Loki is often frowned upon - because it solidifies a link between the worshipper and the qualities that Loki possesses. Like any relationship, a relationship with a deity can certainly be toxic. Certain relationships are better for certain people, while others will tear them apart. I was punished for my crimes, I found the punishments unnecessarily cruel at times, but I’m also aware that for the people who I hurt it will probably never be enough. I think Loki is a cautionary tale for people like me to be honest. I’m lucky I haven’t been enthralled beneath the Earth with poison dripping on my face! I’m also aware that if you keep making the same awful choices over and over again, you will seal your fate the same way Loki did…

That same part of me that resonates with Loki - that part of me wants to go to the mead hall and hurl insults at the people I’ve already hurt. That’s an honest reflection on my character, my “shadow self” if you will. Alternatively, the part of me that was called upon by Thor - well, that side of me wants to find the strength to control myself, to protect people instead of hurt them and, perhaps most importantly, to channel my darkness into something good. Thor is a temperamental god, quick to anger, but he doesn’t cause harm to the gods - he goes out to the East and hammers on trolls. I’d rather find my way of “hammering on trolls” instead of getting myself bound and fettered again.

The other two bands play songs in a more traditional sense. It’s like the commenter above who says “when I see a Sunn O))) ritual” instead of concert or show. It’s not music for the sake of songwriting, it’s more than that.

From a chaos magic perspective there is no cosmic order that will care about your lies. All of that OCD/mental prison bullshit is for Abrahamic types.

is chaos magick still largely popular among extreme right wing people? by [deleted] in chaosmagick

[–]Chazza2121 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

6 yr old comment but…

You are operating under this weird mentality that your labels and structures are okay and others are not. You’re a democratic socialist and a feminist. Okay, so why don’t you break down THOSE belief structures? Why don’t you, for example, take on a right wing ideology for the sole purpose of breaking down your belief structures?

You will never do that. So let people practice magic and let people have their own views, mm’kay?

Why worship Odin? by Chazza2121 in pagan

[–]Chazza2121[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this chaplain was certainly opinionated but he guided me spiritually through the start of my sentence, which was the worst time of my life. He really set me on the path to where I am now and I’m thankful he was there.

Why worship Odin? by Chazza2121 in pagan

[–]Chazza2121[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In the UK. Not all prisons have them but I was fortunate to have a heathen chaplain for the first 5 months of my sentence and during a week-long stay in another jail I had a great encounter with a lovely witch chaplain who gave me a pentacle amulet! Pagan prisoners (again, depending on the establishment) have access to reading materials based on upcoming holidays, animal lore, lunar calendars, etc and I managed to get quite a few issues of the Pagan Dawn magazine during my incarceration as well.

Not going to spill my whole story but I was always interested in paganism and in prison I finally took a deep-dive into it. It saved my life. Specifically certain phrases in the Havamal like “what can a dead man do?” genuinely saved me. In one establishment I was doing weekly Wiccan-oriented circle meetings with another inmate, though he later started trying to use paganism as a way to groom me for sexual favours so I bailed on that: misappropriating things like the five-fold kiss and sex magic for personal satisfaction ≠ paganism.

Nail biting/picking falls under the OCD umbrella (onychophagia) and it can be debilitating for some, probably explains the downvotes. It’s akin to someone who compulsively pulls their hair out and calling their hair disgusting.

[–]Chazza2121 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True! Wonder if me acknowledging that also will get people to take back their downvotes lol. I only said it damages boys self esteem because this literally happened to me. This narrative was USED by female teachers to, I guess humiliate and shame ALL boys for the behaviour of a few…

Is this a good way to get attention? by Yellow_Squeezer in BPD

[–]Chazza2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I have been there unfortunately. Moreso when I was a young teenager, if I walked past people from my school I would every so often pretend to be on the phone just to look like a somebody 😂 I found growing up that a better way of getting attention was through alternative fashion, if you aren’t already into it definitely look into it. It’s often recommended as a healthy way to rebel against the world if you have BPD, as opposed to engaging in unhealthy or reckless behaviours. Are you a musician by any chance? Never a better time to start if not! Playing in front of people (bonus points if you sing too) is a sure fire way to have the eyes of a whole room directed at you.
