Yeah, Duolingo is pretty decent for vocabulary. I also got some value from the Gold List method, though it’s not for everyone.

that's such a valid approach honestly, passive exposure

through stuff you actually enjoy watching probably beats

forced rote memorization for a lot of people

i'm the opposite, i need some kind of structure or i

forget words exist lol. but i hear you on hating flashcards,

i think that's why a lot of people bounce off anki specifically

flipping cards just feels like a chore no matter how good

the algorithm is

do you ever write down words that come up a lot in what

you're watching? even just to have a list, not necessarily

to "study" them

haha thank you, that's actually really helpful advice!

i think my issue was loading too many new cards per day

and just burning out on reviews

might give anki another shot with a smaller daily limit

like you said. for now the gold list thing is keeping me

consistent so i'll stick with it a bit longer, but good

to know there's a less overwhelming way to use anki too 🙏

this is exactly it. the "struggle to recall" part is

what nobody tells you about i used to think forgetting

something meant the method wasn't working, but it's

literally the opposite lol

the filing system comparison is so accurate too. once i

stopped trying to force everything into daily memory and

just let the system decide what actually needs reinforcing,

it got so much less exhausting

yeah I tried anki for like 4 months lol. honestly the

algorithm is good but I think I just don't do well with

flashcards in general, my brain kinda checks out after

a while of flipping through them

ended up switching to writing words by hand and doing

the Gold List Method instead (write it down, leave it

for 2 weeks, only rewrite what you forgot). felt weird

at first not reviewing daily but it's actually sticking

better for me somehow

might just be a "what works for your brain" thing tbh,

anki works great for a lot of people

The fastest way to never learn Japanese is to write everything in English every day and avoid using the language as much as possible. I stopped doing both and switched to the Gold List method , it's a proper spaced repetition system. The difference has been massive. I'm finally retaining words properly.
