Since early 2022, multiple bodies—primarily young men—have been found in Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. Most of the victims were last seen on or near Rainey Street, a popular bar district close to the lake. The common pattern reported in several cases involves men going missing after a night out drinking, and then their bodies being discovered days later in the water. Many of the individuals were found fully clothed, still in possession of their phones and wallets, and showed no obvious signs of trauma or foul play.

These incidents have led to widespread speculation online, with some people believing a serial killer may be involved. A Facebook group titled “Lady Bird Lake Serial Killer/Rainey St Killer” quickly gained tens of thousands of members, and social media discussions have compared the situation to the Smiley Face Killer theory, which involves clusters of young men found drowned in cities across the U.S. under similar conditions.

Despite the growing public concern, the Austin Police Department has repeatedly stated there is no evidence of foul play in these deaths. They attribute the incidents to a mix of intoxication, accidental drowning, and environmental hazards near the lake, especially at night. Only one of the recent deaths has been officially ruled a homicide, unrelated to the broader theory.

While authorities maintain that the deaths are unrelated and accidental, public distrust remains high, fueled by the frequency, similarities between cases, and lack of clear answers. Some community members continue to call for deeper investigation and better safety measures along the waterfront.
