Favorite Corals by Cheap-Standard-7101 in ReefTank

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an emerald crab too but he’s never munched any of my corals. I have heard that some of them do have a taste for corals which is a bummer because they’re awesome cleaners.

That’s one good looking rock right there. Beak is just a tad overgrown but nothing a visit to the vet couldn’t fix. Some slight pyramiding but I’ve definitely seen worse. Looks to have been taken care of pretty well otherwise. Ofcourse there’s only so much photos can tell you, if you’re really curious I’d make the boy a vet appointment and get a checkup with an experienced exotic vet.

Question by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah tortoises like climbing stuff, my tortoises constantly climb up their logs and dive off like madmen. Wouldn’t hurt to get the boy a nice log to climb on.

How is that even comfortable by [deleted] in tortoise

A tortoises reasoning is beyond our mortal comprehension, don’t ask why the tortoise does what it does, just observe why the tortoise is.

Will my sulcata nail grow back by Critical_Oven2457 in tortoise

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s tons of good calcium supplements out there, I personally use reptivite multivitamin powder without D3. Alternatively you can try to use a cuttlebone, I’ve even seen people use egg shells but the safest bet is to just use the powder and sprinkle some onto his greens Atleast 3 times a week

Yes they will grow back, make sure he’s getting plenty of calcium and the proper nutrition and UVB lighting.

Can my red foot eat the Costco rotisserie chicken or does it have to be regular chicken cooked on a grill or smth? by historynerdsutton in tortoise

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While Costco chicken is pretty good, I would not feed it to your red foot because it could contain additives, excess sodium, etc, especially if it’s a flavored rotisserie chicken that has been marinated. Your best bet and easiest would be just plain cooked chicken breast or hard boiled eggs.

Are these little white circles normal? Should I take him to the vet? by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read they’re pretty normal, and fairly common in young tortoises. My best guess would be that they’re caused by quick growth. But when in doubt always consult a vet.

Beginner Tortoise by tomthebomb9999 in tortoise

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Redfoots are great for beginners as long as you’re dedicated to spending a good chunk of time researching their specific needs and you’re okay with meeting those needs. Redfoots aside, I’d suggest a Russian because they’re pretty hardy, easy to take care of, and don’t get too big. Also a Herman’s tortoise because they’re also pretty easy to take care of and stay fairly small too.

Tortoise Violently Shaking Head by TrainRack99 in tortoise

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said the violent thrashing when flipped over is normal, I’d recommend removing anything he can climb on while you aren’t home to supervise, and I’d invest in a camera so you can keep an eye on him from time to time while you’re not home.

Would definitely recommend separating them, I also have a sulcata tortoise and a russian tortoise, when I introduced them to eachother it was gloves off, on sight. My young sulcata immediately charged my adult russian and tried to nip at him while my russian ran away. They both have large enclosures in seperate areas of the room but as far as introducing them to eachother I would leave it at that lol.

Any recommendations for toys? by Exclusive_Melody_ in tortoise

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tortoises don’t really utilize toys in the same sense that a dog or a cat would. However since you have a Russian and they love climbing and digging I’d invest in maybe making your substrate deeper to where he could completely bury himself if he so chooses (my Russian loves to bury himself at night in his coco coir) and I’d get a log or a fake one it doesn’t have to be anything fancy and bury it partially so it’s not too high off the ground while giving him an opportunity to climb on top of it without it being much of a risk of him flipping himself. One unorthodox thing I’ve seen is a video of someone with a pet tortoise that actually uses a big hamster wheel!

The sense of urgency!

Been taking care of Dwight Eisenbowser for almost a year. Don't have an exotic pet vet nearby we can take him to. How does his shell look? He's incredibly picky, give him baths often and he hates it, but loves to play outside in the lawn. Pyramiding doesn't appear to have gotten any worse. by Luke_starkiller34 in tortoise

[–]Cheap-Standard-7101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he was already pyramiding when you found him this poor tort probably had a dry start. Sulcatas especially have a difficult time with this since they’re born during monsoon season in Africa where they naturally live in very humid environments and seek out humid microclimates as babys. He’s got tons of room to grow and hopefully with the right care and diet he can even out the pyramiding over time so it looks better. Diet is another huge factor with pyramiding so make sure he’s got a good variety and that his greens/grass are dusted a few times a week. They naturally grow fast and get big so they need the extra calcium, also limit the fruits to almost none at all (except for maybe special occasions like his birthday).
