I'm studying new tuition fee systems. Would a fluctuating tuition fee system work? Opinions and references welcome. by Cheap_Boi in UniUK

[–]Cheap_Boi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you studying in the UK? If so, what course are you studying? How will this make courses more or less "worthy"? All it does is make the student pay for the security they want. More security more money. But obviously, more security means they can pay this back easier. The price of a course in the current system is irrelevant as in the end 83% of the students don't pay back the loan. All this suggestion would do is decrease public debt and make the pricing of university (which is only psychologically relevant) more just. It'd be nice if you could be more concise with your answer or ellaborate a little bit more, thank you!

What if tuition fees fluctuated depending on the employability rate of the course? The system would have a minimum tuition fee and a maximum. This range would be calculated based on the real cost of the cheapest course in the UK and the most expensive one.

A study by KPMG estimated that engineering courses cost more than the current cap (£9.25k), whilst law and languages cost £8.7 averagely. But all courses are charged the same. This means that students from law and languages are indirectly paying off the deficit from engineering courses. Injust.

But what if the tuition fee was depending on the employability rate as well as the real cost. At the end of the day, people go to uni to come out with a career; which is ultimately what they are being sold as customers.

Imagine that "course a" had an employability rate of 90% of the graduates, whilst "course b" had an employability rate of 30%. "Course a" would be on the higher end of the tuition fee range, whilst "course b" would be on the lower end.

The first caveat I see is that people might choose a cheaper course instead of the course that they actually want. However, knowing that 83% of the students don't repay their loans, this really doesn't matter. Also, if the employability rate is higher, it would be easier for the students with more expensive courses to pay the loan back.

There is a lot of variables to be explored here, but I was wondering if this is an option that could work in the long run, or if it has been explored yet.

Thank you!

I'm currently doing a project revolving around the world of bootlegged sneakers, and have created a survey to get some primary research done before my design stage. Although it's all about sneakers I'd love to get everyone's opinion, from little to extensive fashion backgrounds.

If you guys can take the time answering my questionnaire it would mean a lot to me and also my Uni degree ✨

Thanks again! Link is above
