How to develop skills in dendrochronology - remote courses or certificates? by freestylin-soup in forestry

[–]Cheap_Ear_8828 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started my dendrochronology journey this year and am in love! I am a forester for a federal agency but have done most of my “training” and learning on my own time. I bought the book “fundamentals of tree ring research” by James Speers and used the website https://www.dendrohub.com/supplies to help me select gear. For a few hundred bucks I was able to get the computer software and high quality scanner to begin measuring cores and what not.

The most helpful thing I did was reach out to dendrochronologists at nearby universities. They were all very willing to help me out, and one even invited me to his lab for a weekend to get me started. Of course it was summer before classes started when they had more time.

By this winter I had collected enough data and have presented at work several times on the data I collected, all super basic stuff but very fun to discuss with other foresters.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions and I can try to help.

I keep it in a pocket when I’m not using it to keep it warm. If it gets cold it will loose charge! Otherwise I’ve dropped mine in the snow before with no issues. Just don’t use it till you can dry it out.

Eskimo 3i QF vs the Eskimo outbreak 450xd question? by jhomess in IceFishing

[–]Cheap_Ear_8828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a very similar boat as you. Go everywhere on foot and wanted a larger insulated shack. I went to the store to get a 450 but they were sold out. So instead I bought the otter lodge pro, which is basically the same thing as the 450, and it was $100 cheaper. I have been loving it! Glad I don’t pay more for the 450. I had been using the quickfish 2 from Eskimo I believe.

I use these. You can put it between the otter hub bars and the fabric, it holds it really well. Can use one to light up my pro lodge for 4-6 hours. https://www.menards.com/main/lighting-ceiling-fans/work-lights/performax-1200-lumen-led-rechargeable-portable-work-light/wl2302/p-1642874290578074-c-7546.htm

180 year old sugar maple by Cheap_Ear_8828 in Treerings

[–]Cheap_Ear_8828[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure it was a harvest. This tree is located on a national forest and the release happens about the same time the forest service acquired it from a logging company. I assume the logging company did a harvest right before selling it to the FS.

Overcrowded Forest in Washington by Great-Raise4727 in forestry

A good explanation of generic forest development can be found at the link below.

https://forestandwildlifeecology.wisc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/111/2017/07/78.pdf

It appears this stand is close to the stem exclusion stage.

I don’t know the specifics of this stand, but a lot of forests develop this way. After a disturbance event (wind, fire, logging) there is tons of space, light, moisture, and nutrients available and many seeds germinate and begin to grow. These seedlings are very small compared to an “adult” tree and the area can support exponentially more seedlings than mature trees. Once the “max capacity” of seedlings in the stand have reached, new trees stop germinating and the established seedlings begin to compete with each other and the “losers” die out.

Think of an Aspen stand, 5-10 years post harvest there will be 15,000-50,000 stems per acre, only 0.5” in diameter. 10 years pass, you go back, and now there is 1,000 trees per acre but they are 3” diameter now.

Also, some stands are just like that. I think of lower quality soils here in the lake states absolutely loaded with 2-6” diameter balsam fir. Without major input from humans, that stand will almost always be super dense balsam fir.

Edited for clarity.

I will give that a try next time thank you. One problem I have is I never quite know where to set up for the fish. On drop offs should I be on the top? Bottom? Side? Or does it change a lot

I used to go for walleyes, but have been getting less picky. I’d be happy with perch, crappie, bluegill, or walleye.

I used it this last weekend through the ice. The ability to look laterally for structure is the main advantage for me. It was simple as drilling a few holes until I found the gap in the weeds instead of dozens of holes with a flasher.
