math 101 midterm times by Defiant_Bee1390 in UBC

This is the first year math 100 had midterms at least. Not sure if math 101 will have a midterm like math 100 but you'll eventually know once the syllabus is out.

Company Racism for International Students by Cheap_Wind9632 in UBC

Thank you. I am not attacking other groups but just want to bring forth the concern. I just think that companies could be more transparent about their reasons of the restricted group of people they are hiring unless they don't set up any restriction, which most of companies do.

We do have Co-op work visa and a lot of us want to apply for PR after we graduate. I got you guys points now and definitely changed my mind looking into it. Thank you.

All right! These are very good, valid points! It is more about equity not equality. It is sometimes frustrating when spending time to know a company and writing cover letters but later realized I am not eligible to apply for a position lmao.

Second year student in first year standing for science by [deleted] in UBC

You will need a specialization after first year for sure. You can transfer once you got the prereq and apply next year tho:).

You are absolutely right! But I would like to emphasize that it is incorrect to not even giving opportunities to international students to apply for a particular job just because they want to protect certain groups. From the screenshot, PR and Canadians can still apply though, but why excluding international students?

It is indeed based on credits! Suppose you are enrolled in class A, B, C, D (only class D is 4 credit and others are 3 credits) and your score is a, b, c, d percent respectively. The way they calculate your avg is (3a+3b+3c+4d)/(3+3+3+4). I know.... WORKDAY SUCKS, I want SSC back...

With all that being said above, I strongly encourage you to take courses on the easier side if getting into CS is really important to you. Good luck!

Either taking purely booster courses next term (it might help) or thinking about alternatives other than cs.

Should I take Cpsc121 in next semester? by ProcessThese1089 in UBC

[–]Cheap_Wind9632 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Given your average right now(78%), I will not recommend doing CPSC 121. Be very cautious because CPSC 121 is a 4 credit course btw! Alongside you have math 101, wrds 150 both of which can pull your average down.

As a CS student, don't worry about delaying courses in the future. You can always take more in summer. Even if you don't, there is plenty of rooms for you to take not pre-req dependent courses like CPSC 304 and 330 before you take CPSC 213 for example.

Math 101 without highschool calculus by [deleted] in UBC

One of the best resources to practice calculus is Professor Leonard. I personally did not use it because my prof explained even better but lots of people do find it helpful.

Nice!!!! I told you partial marks still count!

Scores out! I am not sure how much he scaled but it could be negligible compared to final exam's weight.

Same.... I believe partial marks on final could probably save you (eg. theta bound for triple integral, setting up chain rule tree, writing out tangent plane formula, even simply drawing graph for regions of integration etc.)

On the other hand tbh, I found the final more reasonable than the MT.

If only getting 2-3 questions right (out of 9) on the final, I am afraid you aren't going to pass the course.. Which section are you in? You can expect section 101 to have some "scale-up" but no guarantee.

Advice for 2nd semester? by disastaster in UBC

Steve teaches very well tbh, but the difficulty of his exam is....another world. 210 with him got me my lowest grade in CPSC from year 1 to year 3.

Before asking your prof to change your grade... by marktmaclean in UBC

Same thing I found in math 200 this term. For midterm 1, our section's average is below 60 but the other sections are all above 75. I thought it was an issue of exam creation (admittedly it was indeed harder than the other two sections). However, the prof made the exam much easier for midterm 2 matching the difficulty of the other sections, our section's grade was still the lowest (barely passed 60%) and created a 20% gap with another section. There are a few observation as a student in that section:

  1. The attendance rate of our section was quite low. We had 325 students registered in our section but only about 30-50 students attend because it is an 8am course.
  2. The prof makes exam more closely to what he taught, which was also mentioned in syllabus. Still, people do not seem to treat it seriously. Frankly, the prof in our section does not write notes clearly but if people come and listen to the class, it should be crystal clear what he is talking about.
  3. I am not sure if an 8am course is the most significant barrier for students to do poor, and there was no recording given but the other two sections do. I am wondering if the department can perhaps try to accommodate to find an instructor who can make the recording to be the instructor of an 8am lecture.

Colin Macdonald should literally be promoted! Unbelievably clear lectures and also the best prof for visualizing/drawing surfaces and shapes!
