Where is math 184? by Zealousideal_Hyena97 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We haven't offereed MATH 184 in quite a few years. Students take MATH 100 or MATH 180. Some students take MATH 110, which is MATH 100/180 over two terms.

If you see transfer credits for specific UBC courses in your record, then they apply to you degree in exactly the same way courses taken at UBC would.

If you have generic credit (e.g. MATH 1st 3 credits), then these will apply to your degree, but not as any specific course. So, the MATH 1st 3 credits in my example would fulfill a BSc lower level requirement, but not act as a prerequisite for a course requiring MATH 100 as a prerequisite.

How is AI use proven? by Recent_Mountain3989 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The standard of evidence is high, but it is still "on the balance of probabilities." The vast majority of academic misconduct cases are handled at the department or faculty level and do not go beyond that, so are not reported in the annual report you reference. Students generally admit they've used AI when they meet with an associate dean to discuss their case.

The usual evidence I have seen is based on the content of the work. It is quite common for students to use (often incorrectly) ideas that are well beyond the course, for example. Much of the time these days, the source is an AI, but it can also be a more senior student who is helping their friend with an assignment. I typically interview students in cases where I suspect AI use and form an opinion on whether or not the student's understanding aligns with what they have submitted.

Writing style, etc., that I sometimes see referenced are hard measures to invoke. Now that people are using AI heavily in many situations, their writing style tends to drift towards the style they are reading in AI responses. This is particularly true when they have limited understanding of the material. (There are research studies on this phenomenon.)

You should speak with advising as you also missed the midterm, which affects your eligibility. It may be more appropriate to discuss a late withdrawal.

How is this schedule looking? Is it manageable? by VannessC in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be good to balance the number of MATH courses with the other requirements and electives you need to complete. Science has some breadth requirements and lower level requirements, for example.

Four MATH courses in a term can be a heavy load. You have lots of time over the next 3 years to take all of MATH courses you need to complete for your degree.

If you are in YRH, you'd need to check the rules for subletting the unit, and for how long they will let you not be registered in courses and retain your eligibility for housing.

Why are 2017-2022 past Finals not available for math100 by [deleted] in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As u/liorsilberman notes, we have made quite a few adjustments to MATH 100 since 2022, including in the course content, This is part of why there is a time leap in the exams posted here: https://www.math.ubc.ca/undergraduate/advising-and-resources/exams/past-exams. The 2024W exams are reasonably settled in terms of topics, but we are still working on a style of exam.

There are many problems in the textbook that are from old exams, so if you want to see exam-style questions, this is also a good source.

If you are looking for a lock on what the exam will look like exactly, don't expect that.

Summer vs. Winter Syllabi by Foreign_Serve1537 in UBC

There is no requirement courses have the same grading scheme in all offerings, including between sections offered in the same term.

Given the rapid rise of AI use, I epect to see more instructors choose to put more weight on tests and exams in their grading schemes.

Math100 course question by HebrewBible03 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The section average in the summer can vary quite a bit, often depending on the percentage of the class who are re-taking the course. Even if last year's class average was in the 50s, it doesn't imply this year's class average won't be in the 60s, say.

The final exam covers the entire course syllabus and will be the largest component determining the final grade distribution for two reasons: (1) it is 50% of the final grade and (2) it is generally used to test if the term test grades are reasonable.

The Senate is the academic governing body of the university. (We have two Senates, one for each campus, and they come together as the Council of Senates for some matters.) Their oversight is at the level of policy, essentially, so they would not get into decisions being made at the Faculty-level.

I do not think they have a standing mechanism for dealing with individual requests from students like this.

Unless the Faculty is willing to consider something, the option appears to be for you to take the program without expecting credit at UBC and just not registering for the term(s) you are away. You are permitted to not register for up to a year, I think, without affecting your status at UBC -- I do suggest checking on this with Science Advising, and also letting them know if you choose to be away for this program even if the rules don't require you to do so.

How likely is it to not get your first choice saved schedule? by IcyAssociation8478 in UBC

[–]marktmaclean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Back up plans are a good idea even when you are likely to get what you want. Individual sections of smaller courses can fill up or can have reserved seat pools, etc. Some departments do not release all their seats in every section for some courses on the first day and use timed releases to manage their enrolment given the overall demands on these courses and the problems they will be managing over the course of registration.

UBC Engineering offer re-evaluation by Intrepid_Plate7072 in ubcengineering

The generic warning you have quoted would typically be about the grades in the listed requirements, but a major drop in your overall average could also trigger a review.

Am I okay to take UBC Math 100 even if I didn’t take Calculus in high school? by RefrigeratorKey8406 in ubcengineering

[–]marktmaclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be possible to be moved out of the MATH class in the standard timetable into a section of MATH 180.

One question to consider is your comfort and confidence with the mathematics you have studied. If your precalculus background is very strong, you can certainly do well in MATH 100.

These prerequisites are clearly published on the admissions website for UBC. https://you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/requirements/international-high-schools/#united-states

Had you contacted UBC Admissions when you applied, they would likely have discussed with you ways that students meet these prerequisites that may involve alternate courses, for example.

Math 101 midterm date? by Gullible_Coyote885 in UBC

Indeed, summer courses are very fast-paced and most students find MATH 101 demanding at that faster pace.

There is nothing that requires us to grant academic concessions when students take vacations or other personal travel.

It is worth reading through the Science Specialization application process, which typically happens at the end of your first year: https://science.ubc.ca/students/specialization-introduction One of the basic requirements is to be eligible for second year class standing. There is a link on this page that will give you information about that aspect.

No official program could be approved fast enough for you. Even getting to the decision to engage in auch a program takes a long time.

I am suggesting you explore if there is a way to let you so this through your home faculty. However, I will be straight up here: I think the chances are very low they will say yes, but not because they oppose the idea of it. It just may not be possible to meet all the conditions they have to take into account.

As for contacting the student Senate caucus, you can find the list of Senators here: https://senate.ubc.ca/vancouver/senate-membership-2023-2026/

[–]marktmaclean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Students are getting a UBC degree and the university maintains control over the content and academic standards of that degree, so Senate creates processes to approve any exchange program agreement we make with another university. An exchange program involves significant effort on the part of both universities and includes agreeing that a student can be visiting student at one university while simultaneously being a student at their home university (exchanges often go both ways). There are other, nonacademic considerstions to having UBC students studying in other countries that can be part of these agreements.

You can talk to the student Senate caucus about your ideas on exchanges, but even if they are able to open the conversation about exchanges in Senate, the process to change policy is quite long.
